The pick: A checked shirt for everyday wear

The humble check is a prevalent pattern - and for good reason

There are few items of clothing that can be worn in any situation. Jeans are the obvious candidate for this category, but even the coldest-blooded man has to do away with denim once heat hits. But there is one garment that, save for black tie balls and the swimming pool, can be worn in almost any situation: the humble checked shirt.

Now, obviously to make this wardrobe stalwart work as everyday wear, you have to keep your checks in check, but opt for a subtle or tight pattern and you can don such a shirt everywhere from the office to a weekend hike.

Our pick comes in the form of a Tom Ford special. Like the majority of Mr Ford’s offerings, the Rady checked shirt is cut slimly, pushing it slightly more towards a formal setting, but is crafted from a versatile cotton-voile. Proving that his casual designs are just as good as his signature suiting, Ford has cut the shirt from this breezy material to make it almost weightless to wear.

Pair with a dark suit and block colour tie for casual officewear, or take it outside on the weekends with jeans and boots. Alternatively, layer over a plain white t-shirt, or under a jumper or cardigan. Or roll those sleeves up and wear it with board shorts. The possibilities just go on and on…
