The Netflix Originals you need to watch this year

Here's our pick of the best Netflix movies to in 2017

There’s no doubt about it: Netflix is taking over the world. Having created some of the best shows over the past couple of years (here’s looking at you, Narcos), it’s only set for bigger and better things in the coming year. What’s more, you can now download a number of shows and movies rather than having to stream them off the internet. Genius.

Will Smith and his Suicide Squad director, David Ayer, have reunited to create Bright, an action-thriller that imagines a Los Angeles in which humans, Orcs and other fantastical creatures coexist. Sound suitably whacky? That’s because it is, and it’s set to be one of the best productions Netflix has ever showed. Netflix has reportedly paid out $90 million for the movie, which will be out later this year.

Two of the world’s most iconic actors, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford last played opposite each other in 1979 and this year reunite in Our Souls at Night, they play neighbours where he’s a widower and she’s a widow and they discover each other in the autumn of their lives. An arty, beautifully shot movie, Our Souls at Night is bound to be a hit. Release date this year, but no secure date has been set.

Pitt in Fury

Brad Pitt stars as General Stanley McChrystal in this critically-acclaimed adaptation of journalist Michael Hastings’ 2012 bestseller The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan. McChrystal is portrayed as living a rock-star lifestyle and seen as disrespecting top officials in government, ultimately leading to his resignation.

Angelina Jolie directed and wrote this adaptation of Loung Ung’s Memoir where she tells the harrowing story of her family’s ordeal during the reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, where a quarter of Cambodia’s Population was killed in a mass genocide the targeted government employees. The story follows the life of Ung’s father and the torment that her family when through during the genocide. Due to be released later this year.

Anything with an A-list cast of this stature is bound to be a hit, and we can guarantee that that’s what this’ll be. Co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, the movie is centred around a young girl named Mija who risks her life to stop a multi-national company from kidnapping a huge animal named Okja. If it sounds childish, it’s not. This is an insane portrayal, played out by some of the biggest names in Hollywood (Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Lily Collins to name a few). Due to be released later this year.
