London Fashion Week Men’s: Belstaff reinvent themselves

A perfectly-curated blend of retro sports graphics and striking modern techniques saw out LFWM's last day

The final day of this season’s London Fashion Week Men’s saw adventure-driven heritage brand Belstaff venture into new, uncharted territory. In a move of innovative reinvention, the SS18 collection takes its inspiration from the epic Paris Dakar Rally, and uses the experiences of the riders and racers themselves to craft practical and stylish pieces.

From the unpredictable climate to the rough terrain, Belstaff have risen to the challenge of creating a range that would fare just as well actually taking on the motor-fuelled expedition as it does paying homage to it.

Think a perfectly-curated blend of retro sports graphics and strikingly modern techniques – from laser cut detailing to the latest, most pioneering breathable fabrics. Belstaff have successfully delivered on creating multi-seasonal, weather-proof outerwear to protect us from our own increasingly unpredictable climate – be it meteorologically or politically.

Focusing on individual pieces, the palette captures the essence of the North African landscape through burnt oranges, sandy tones and rustic brown hues, and is complimented by the sharp and striking counterpoints offered by the outerwear’s retro cobalt blues. The brand’s signature red and white stripe also shines through across the collection, an indication of Belstaff’s definitive take on these timeless designs. What’s more, this motif also helps bridge the gap between understated daywear and classic luxury sportswear.

Key pieces – and the Gentleman’s Journal picks – include the Safari Jacket, an item of outerwear that has enjoyed a notable renaissance of late and should be your new go-to sophisticated lightweight option, and the iconic Roadmaster jacket, destined to never go out of style. Forever standing the test of time and continuously proving its practicality, this year’s Roadmaster jacket has been upgraded with the latest UV protection and breathable technology. Old dog; new tricks.
