The time for procrastination is over. Are you still trying to pretend it isn’t coat weather and freezing by the time you get to your front gate? Then it’s time to finally sort out your autumn/winter wardrobe.
And that means it’s time to think about layering – because while it’s too fresh to just go outside in your shirtsleeves, you’ll be sweating through by lunch if you reach straight for your thickest, chunkiest jacket.
You need options – stylists call them trans-seasonal and mid-layer garments, we prefer shirts, jumpers and coats, and a variety of them, that you can take off and put on as the weather changes.
We took at look at Liberty London’s menswear edit for inspiration. Not only is it the home to some of GJ’s favourite designer labels, but they’ve also welcomed in some stellar new brands for autumn/winter.
Stella McCartney Button Knit Polo Shirt
A.P.C. Scott Multi Stripe Merino Wool Jumper
Editions MR, Stella McCartney and Eastpak x Raf Simons are just some of Liberty London’s recently acquired brands. We’re particularly enamoured with this Stella McCartney polo shirt – not only does it stand out as a modern twist on a classic but, with its bold contrasting print, it’s the perfect example of a strong base for your layering.
It’s easy to play it safe and pair plain shirts with plain jumpers with plain overcoats. Before you know it, you’ve left the house in all-black for the third day running. If you’re going to layer but still want to have some edge, let a pop of print peep out from underneath.
Onto the subject of coats, there are numerous styles to choose from and staples that every man should have in his wardrobe. Chances are, you’ve already got a classic mac, a peacoat and/or a leather jacket, so why not take advantage of a new season and having new wardrobe to fill by trying out a new style, fabric or pattern?
Here are three of our favourites from the Liberty Menswear edit…
Paul Smith Suede Zip Biker Jacket
AMI Check Blouson
Calvin Klein 205W39NYC Check Fray Double-Breasted Coat
If you resisted the urge to reach out and grab a suede jacket in the summer, the time to give into this Paul Smith number is now. Wear it with suit trousers and a crisp shirt and you’ve got yourself an everyday outfit to see you through this season in style.
Meanwhile, the rebellious tartan is back as one of AW18’s biggest trends. Style it out in your double-breasted best with this coat from the Calvin Klein 205W39NYC collection.
