The latest tailor bringing formalwear back to football

Because footballers dress like gentlemen, too

There is an illustrious and stylish history of respected tailors teaming up with sportsmen. By swapping their stripes for suits and boots for brogues, club’s official suit sponsors ensure that squads not only look good once the final whistle has blown, but also act as an elegant reminder that the players are just as much a team off the pitch as they are on.

And now, West Ham United have decided to follow suit.

The Hammers’ tailor of choice is Hawes & Curtis, who – ahead of the Premier League club’s move to the Olympic Stadium for the beginning of the 2016/17 season – have designed a trim two-piece for the first-team squad, coaching staff and management.

Made in Italy from Super 140’s Italian woollen cloth, the suit itself is navy, with claret piano facing and lining to reflect the West Ham colours. A similarly coloured striped silk tie and pocket square perpetuate this scheme.

Similarly styled to the tailor’s 1913 collection, an embroidered logo on both the chest and tie distinguish West Ham United’s suit from the commercial garment. The shirts, made from two-fold cotton, are also embroidered with the club crest.

West Ham United captain and longest serving player, Mark Noble, thinks the new suits are contemporary, well-tailored, and agrees that modern footballers should aspire to the match day tailoring of past legends such as George Best.

“It is really important that the team looks smart and feels great because we are extremely proud to represent West Ham United Football Club,” says Noble.

“What we wear reflects who we are and we should always showcase the Club in the best possible light. And the move to the massive 60,000-seater London Stadium has attracted a lot of press interest – so we need to look our very best!”
