Car of the week: Gstaad Guy’s Bentley Bentayga EWB Chalet Edition
Welcome to the £330,000 Bentley Bentayga Chalet Edition designed by the uber-rich's favourite social media satirist.
- Words: Rory FH Smith
There’s a glorious irony in a £330,000 Bentley Bentayga, with the signature of a global social media star burnt into the dashboard, that’s designed – in his own words – to “blend in.” But that pretty much sums up Gstaad Guy.
Wielding a social media following of close to two million, the six foot something, London-raised satirist has made a living out of poking fun at the absurd lives of well living, ultra-rich types. The kind that frequents exclusive Alpine retreats all year round and insist they have a direct line to a chap who can rustle up the best club sandwich on Lake Como.
Inspired, somewhat usurpingly, by chalet interiors, the car is awash with details and knowing nods to life lived halfway up a mountainside.
They are precisely the audience that the Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase (EWB) Chalet Edition was made for. "Luxury doesn't exist in statements," Gstaad Guy tells me, taking a break from his Constance or Colton personas. "It exists in the details.”
The devil’s in the detail: Saddle leather, open-pore Liquid Amber wood veneers, diamond-quilted surfaces, discreet tweed detailing and ‘Fireglow’ accents
Inspired, somewhat usurpingly, by chalet interiors, the car is awash with details and knowing nods to life lived halfway up a mountainside. "A chalet is an entity that exists in the most harsh of climates but tries to keep you as cosy as possible on the inside," he explains. "It's literally two extremes with a bit of wood in between. And that's something Bentley does - you're on a motorway, you're in the mountains, and you have the extreme on the outside and then the extreme opposite on the inside, where you're being cradled in this cocoon of comfort."
This unlikely partnership was no accident. Gstaad Guy assures he’s been a long-time fan of Bentley. “I've been trying to connect with the brand for a while, and one day, they connected back. They finally accepted the date,” he jokes. “Creating my own car was always the dream and they said, let's start with the dream and see where it goes."
The one of only 25 Bentayga EWB Chalet Edition is priced at £330,000, available through Mulliner exclusively
Shortly after that initial meeting, Gstaad Guy found himself in the depths of Mulliner, Bentley’s in-house bespoke division. Led by designer Hugo R. Chizlett and the Mulliner team, Gstaad Guy’s vision came fruition in the form of a Bentley Bentayga EWB, complete with Saddle leather, open-pore Liquid Amber wood veneers, diamond-quilted surfaces, discreet tweed detailing and ‘Fireglow’ accents. "Tone is the important word," says Chizlett. "There isn't 50 colours - there's just very nuanced tones. You step from tans into browns into almost brownie reds. You follow the horizontal line, the grain of the wood." The Gstaad Guy's favourite Alpine Flower motif is embroidered into the headrests, with red and green stitching, adding a wink of Swiss heritage without tipping into the theatrical.
Outside, a hand-sprayed coat of Light Tudor Grey, which takes approximately 60 hours to apply, is complimented by ‘Fireglow’ coloured accents, bronze styling details and small chalet graphics, etched onto the front wing. "If you really look close," says the Gstaad Guy, "you notice the spark."
He’s keen to point out that the Bentayga is more Constance than Colton. "This car might be too understated for Colton," he says, panning the louder, shoutier half of his satirical twin personalities.
With just 25 examples available, each configurable in small ways – a different seat configuration here, a discreet set of initials there – all the cars are available exclusively through Bentley Mulliner.
“The Gstaad Guy is someone who is addicted to excellence and who wants the best of the best in all categories of their life,” he tells me. “In other words, it's a connoisseur, and connoisseurs love Bentleys.”
