One of the most prestigious whiskey brands in the world, The Macallan has unveiled its all-new distillery and visitors centre following a £140 million refurbishment. Opening to the public last month, the distillery was designed by internationally renowned architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, whose previous work includes the highly acclaimed Leadenhall Building in London.
Upon arrival at the new centre, at the heart of The Macallan estate, you are met with a striking piece of contemporary architecture which is cut into the slope of the land, taking its cues from the surrounding ancient Scottish hills. The design maximises the aesthetic beauty of the building without detracting from the visual impact of the Speyside landscape.
Step inside the visitor centre and immerse yourself in the world of The Macallan, by taking a tour and getting familiar with The Macallan’s Six Pillars — the six key elements that make up this iconic whiskey. Each of the Six Pillars are explored through an interactive and tech-driven installation that brings the brand’s whiskey-making process and heritage to life. There will, of course, also be the chance to taste for yourself the incomparable result of The Macallan’s painstaking process to create the perfect blend.
This newest venture for The Macallan pays homage to the brand’s fascinating history – introducing guests to the stunning Easter Elchies estate, which has been home to the luxury single malt since 1824. This wealth of tradition has been fused with a contemporary architectural design, and a chance for a modern audience to experience the artistry at the heart of this heritage Scottish brand.
