Editor’s Picks: a vintage Ferrari, Sunspel summer polo shirt and James Bond’s sunglasses

From a wireless charging speaker to a pair of bespoke chinos, this is what we want this week

Vuarnet Glacier Sunglasses

Remember that scene in SPECTRE, where Bond takes off from his psychoanalysis session with Lea Seydoux’s Bond girl and then proceeds to throw himself into a part-car, part-plane chase down the side of the Alps until the plane’s wings smash off, he shoots up a couple of SUVs and crashes straight through a chalet? Yes, that one. Well these are the sunglasses that got him through it.

We realise you’re unlikely to be skiing as summer approaches, but these sunglasses, with removable side cases should conditions on the slopes get very bad next season, are fitted with the legendary Vuarnet sense, meaning that they’ll not only work all year round, but they’ll do a stellar job day-in-, day-out.

Native Union x La Boite Concept Speaker

We’re all for chic homewares at Gentleman’s Journal. Be it a designer chair, or a particularly good-looking lamp, we won’t fill our flats and houses with any old objects. This, the latest concept speaker by Native Union and La Boite, is certainly good-looking. And, what’s more, it is one of the best sounding speakers going.

Step aside, mass producers. We want this high-powered, wooden speaker, that delivers an incredibly natural sound while looking like its just been wheeled off the set of Mad Men. Bluetooth enabled, it also allows wireless charging of your phone — what more could you want?

Sunspel Men’s Cotton Riviera Polo Shirt

Like the sunglasses above, this garment too has a link to Daniel Craig’s James Bond. Sunspel’s original Riviera Polo Shirt was tailored for Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and has since become synonymous with 007 style.

A versatile wardrobe staple, it is crafted from a breathable cotton mesh fabric and has only the most essential of details for a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Perfect for a lazy day in the home office, or an adventure in tropical climes, this is a staple that should really be sitting in your wardrobe already. After all, if it’s good enough for a superspy, then it’s good enough for you.

Timex Fairfield Contactless Payment, powered by bpay

Wearable tech is all well and good, but how many of us actually have an Apple Watch? They’re notoriously not the best looking watch, evoking the digital watch face rather than the stylish round face we’re accustomed to. We understand that most of us are married to our Chopards, IWCs and Breitlings, but if you’re looking for something with a smaller price tag and added tech, this Fairfield Chronograph is the watch for you.

It looks relatively innocuous, but this humble Timex contains a bPay chip, meaning that you can link any of your debit or credit cards to the watch and use it to contactlessly pay — in a shop, on the tube, or at a bar. Simple, sophisticated and, most importantly, useful.

1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Nart Spyder

Luigi Chinetti was a tough and gritty racing driver who gave Enzo Ferrari his first of many victories at Le Mans. To thank him for his efforts, Enzo put the racer in charge of a critically important step in Ferrari’s history: Cracking the American market. This is the car with which he did just that.

This is the first of three road-going NART Daytona Spiders, a special car commissioned by Luigi Chinetti for his wife. It first hit the road in 1971 and today is being sold — striking metallic blue paintwork and leather interior unrestored — for a shade under $1 million. Worth every penny, surely.

Spoke London Summerweights Chinos

Most of us will already have been struck by sweltering office syndrome this year. With an unseasonably warm spring, the radiators and jumpers were off by March and we were all complaining about the lack of air con. Step in Spoke London, a new almost-bespoke chino company who can solve all your warmth woes.

Hold on, almost-bespoke? That’s right. They don’t measure you and tailor perfectly to your legs, but Spoke have a considerably higher level of customisation than your usual off-the-peg chinos, offering sizes to the inch and a choice of three different leg fits and cuts. And, with their new Summerweight collection, the light cotton will keep you cool behind your desk until winter rolls around.
