How to dress for the 2017 wedding season

Expert outfitters New & Lingwood share their sartorial tips and tricks for summer weddings

Wedding dressing can be a notoriously knotty affair. From waistcoats and tails to roses and toppers, a smooth walk down the aisle is roadblocked by many potential pitfalls and potholes. But worry not, gents, renowned outfitters New & Lingwood are on hand to shoot some quick-fire sartorial tips your way, to ensure that you don’t make any big mistakes on the big day.

A formal wedding calls for classic dressing and attention to detail. Opt for a timeless three-piece day suit in navy or grey. Depending on the formality of your event, you may wish to go for a classic black tuxedo or morning suit for a dashing and elegant look.

Although the day carries a conservative dress code, this does not mean that attention to detail needs to be lost. Don’t skimp on the base pieces of your outfit, or settle for white because it’s easier. Instead, add a dash of colour by introducing a shirt in the perfect shade of blue, or a wonderfully complimentary-coloured sock for interest.

As you walk down the aisle, you should look your very best – from your top to your toes. For the latter, ensure that you polish your shoes to a mirror finish, as every gentleman should. Secondly, make sure your trouser hems are at the correct length, not too much of a break, otherwise it may look like your trousers are falling down…

Sartorial flair is acceptable at weddings, perhaps more so than anywhere else. So, even though you’re a guest, stand out from the crowd and brave an alternative outfit. For something less conventional, experiment with different colours and textures to showcase your personal flair and style. But, be warned – make sure your use of different patterns and colours complement one another, and never fight.

This should be rule one, but always ensure that your suit jacket is immaculately tailored and is not – either literally or metaphorically – rough around the edges. Your shoulders should be neatly cut, and sleeves should be perfectly abbreviated – showing at least an inch of your shirt cuff.

There’s always one wedding invitation that doesn’t specify a dress code. But, instead of worrying, just opt for a sharp-yet-understated look – you don’t have to go the full black tie. Additionally, when you are given a code it can be difficult, but see Cocktail and you’ve won the sartorial lottery – this’ll give you the freedom to add personality, push the boundaries and encapsulate everything you admire in fashion – whilst keeping it tasteful.
