Cocktail of the Week: The Best Kept Secret

Wet your whistle with this wine-based beverage

Many men never dare order a brightly-coloured, fruity cocktail. But for those of us who aren’t embarrassed to step away from amber, whisky-based beverages every now and again, there are a whole host of intricate and exciting cocktails to try – many of them so innovative and sophisticated that they make the Old Fashioned look, well, old fashioned.

One such cocktail is ‘The Best Kept Secret’, a creation of renowned mixologist Simone Caporale – who has partnered with London restaurant Quaglino’s to help shape their new cocktail menu. And, luckily for us, Caporale has revealed what makes up this signature drink so seasoned drinks makers can try it at home.

Begin by taking a small wine glass, filling it with ice, and pouring in 60ml of a medium-bodied red wine, along with 30ml of Visciolata – a type of cherry wine – and 15ml of Creme de Cacao dry liqueur.

Add 10ml of vanilla syrup, and top with crushed ice. Garnish with mint sprigs and seasonal berries, and sprinkle with icing sugar.

Caporale tells us that this cocktail was inspired by the seasons’ change between Autumn and Winter, and conjures up flavours of dark chocolate, red berries and fine wine. If your drinks cabinet isn’t as well-stocked as the master mixologist’s, however, you can always head down to Quaglino’s to taste the genuine article.
