Classic Car of the Week: The £1 million 1962 Ferrari 250 GT

A closer look at the '62 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II by Pininfarina

By the late 1950s, Ferrari had firmly established itself as a builder of great Italian racing cars. The marque had become synonymous with epic races such as the Millie Miglia, which it won consecutively for six years between 1948 and 1953. Capitalising on this reputation, the 250 GT differed from the race-ready cars that had gone before it – instead, flying the flag Ferrari’s line of luxurious grand tourers, built more for style, comfort and high-speed cruising rather than racing.

Making its first public appearance at the 1959 Paris motor show, the Series II sported new, open headlamps, a squarer front nose and elongated tail lamp lenses in the rear fenders. Inside, there was more space, a larger boot (for that all-important weekend away) and improved furnishings in the cabin.

Under the Series II’s sleek exterior lay the latest iteration of the Colombo 3.0-litre V12, designated Tipo 128F. This new engine was capable of producing 240bhp, linked to a four-speed synchromesh manual transmission and hydraulic disk brakes.

This particular 250 GT is believed to be the penultimate Series II cabriolet to come out of Maranello. Originally finished in Bianco Pertito with Blu leather interior, the car was sold to Amadeo Dalle Molle of Padova in 1963 before it crossed the Atlantic in 1972, when it was purchased by Mr Howard Sheronas in Miami, Florida. Today, the car is finished in silver with black leather interior and comes with a Ferrari Classiche certification.

This car will be sold at the RM Sotheby’s Paris sale on February 8, 2017. Click here for more details. Guide Price: £830,000 – £1,000,000
