Cillian Murphy's new gig? Versace leading man

Cillian Murphy has been tapped as the latest new face of Versace, fronting its Icons range

At this year's Oscars Cillian Murphy scooped the Best Actor gong in a really nice tuxedo. It was from Versace. Cut sharp to his frame like most suits designed by the Italian brand, the tuxedo was exemplary of the impressive talent of the skilled tailors at the Atelier Versace.

For the suit Murphy and his stylist Rose Forde looked to the Italian label’s archives for inspiration, and ended up creating a black tweed suit with lapels, which was referential of Versace's Nineties tailoring. His patent shoes were shining. His cummerbund too. A silky shirt gave it depth, while a 18 carat yellow gold brooch actually drew inspiration from Oppenheimer.

It was a moment. It was a suit worthy of an Oscar winner. Sleek, and oozing Old Hollywood. But there was more to it than just being an outfit for Oscars night. It was the soft launch of Murphy's newest role: Versace campaign star.

Murphy had worn Versace (when he was taking a break from big Paul Smith and Saint Laurent suits) on several occasions throughout the awards season campaign run. And today the brand announced that Murphy will front the upcoming men’s Versace Icons collection, and a dedicated campaign is coming. “I am thrilled that Cillian is joining the Versace family," Donatella Versace said via a press release. "He is a truly exceptional actor and totally deserves his Oscar win. He is magnetic and mesmerising in front of a camera and I loved seeing him bring Versace to life."

What the campaign is set to look like is yet unknown, but you probably shouldn't be expecting Murphy in a baroque silk shirt anytime soon. The Icons range is more traditional in the sense that it's focused around sharpo tailoring and wardrobe essentials, rather than the flashy, printed other side to Versace.

He's triumphing big with his acting, and now Murphy's scooped the coveted role of fashion guy. Not a bad week.
