Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to be invited by Chopard to Gstaad, Switzerland for a sneak peek of the Maison’s latest Alpine Eagle collection. It had been a little more than six years since Chopard launched the range in the very same Swiss town. Since then, this particular selection has gone on to scale great heights.

For me the Alpine Eagle collection offers a sports watch that is quite unique, comes at a fair price and whose quality is second to none. The watch press always holds Chopard in high regard when it comes to its manufacturing and construction. This collection’s use of Lucent Steel – which is 50 per cent harder than normal steel while using 80 per cent recycled steel – bears this out.

This year’s releases seem very much like a coming-of-age moment for the Alpine Eagle collection. The models exude a confidence that says this range is here to stay. They include an Alpine Eagle Flying Tourbillon as well as an Alpine Eagle 41 XP CS in Platinum. Our favourite, though, is the Alpine Eagle 41 SL Cadence 8HF. This is the collection’s new high-frequency timepiece. It’s incredibly light thanks to being made using ceramicised titanium, not just on the case but on the crown and bezel.

This watch wins out because the attention to detail is incurable and its super-light construction makes it the perfect weekend sports watch. Limited to 250 pieces, the Alpine Eagle 41 SL Cadence 8HF (ref. 298600-3028) is delivered on a rubber or calfskin leather strap and a pin buckle in ceramicised titanium, all priced at £22,500. Sounds very close to the height of luxury for us.
