The best men’s hairstyles for summer

As the days get longer, should your hair get shorter?

Summer is well on its way – despite what these belated April showers may be telling us. But, take it from us, you’ll no quicker have put your umbrella away than the sun will come out. And, when that time comes, you’ll be wishing you’d prepared your hair for the heat.

There are several hairstyle trends flying around the groomosphere this summer, and they have neither length nor formality in common. So, if you’re looking to change up your locks before the summer hits, pick any one of the diverse below and you’ll be a cut above everyone else.

Long hair may seem like a strange choice for summer, but this swept back comb-over is the perfect surfer style to sport this summer. The length affords it a messy quality, but keeping the comb-over, or side-parting as a base to your barnet means that you’ll still be able to look sufficiently smart for formal occasions.

Rather than going to get this cut in, the long swept comb-over is best adopted if you’ve already been rocking the shorter version throughout winter. Just let it grow out, and perhaps thin it out to give it a lighter feel for the hotter months.

The longer your curls, the warmer you’ll be – so a tight crop of curls on top is the ideal way to adapt your existing cut for the summer. Ask your barber to bring down the volume, crop everything in much tighter and minimise potential stragglers when the humidity ramps up.

Those of us with naturally curly hair tend to be prone to frizz, so remember – summer months will supercharge your locks. If you’re not comfortable going full afro, then get it chopped down and you’ll look respectable even during the height of August hotness.

A clean, clear-cut cut, the buzz is the business. Never will it drop from fashion, and never will it look out of place. At once progressive and old school, this is an iconic haircut for a reason and, unless you’ve got an exceedingly oddly-shaped head, it’ll suit anybody.

And those benefits extend beyond the aesthetic. Keeping your sides shorn will mean more ventilation to your head, and a haircut that not only looks cool, but feels cool too.

A classic since Elvis, the modern pompadour is more David Beckham – with buzzed sides, an undercut and a sleeker style than the King’s earlier textured and longer styles. A barber shop speciality, this is a popular 2017 cut regardless – and we don’t see its status waning before summer.

Paired with a fade, you get the cooling benefits of a buzzcut – but with something a little more stylish and less ‘army-issue’ on top. So, if you’re concerned about temperature, but don’t want to sacrifice your sartorial standing, then pomp it.

A surfer special, the long messy style is a winner for the summer months. It requires little attention, little upkeep, but a non-vain personality to remain convincingly tousled, this is one of the easiest hairstyles you’ll ever have, because to achieve it you must let your hair do just one thing; grow.

Perhaps use a salt spray to give it some texture and not tempt lankness, but don’t put too much thought into it. Paired best with a scruff beard, this is beach hair at its best, and will give you a devil-may-care look the ladies will inevitably love.
