Property of the Week: Chamonix chalet

At the crossroads between France, Switzerland and Italy, this down-home getaway blends contemporary sensibilities with ski and sun…

Chamonix is widely thought of as the finest ski destination on the continent, a valley famed for its challenging terrain and expansive backdrop of rugged white-and-black mountains. The inaugural Winter Olympics was hosted in this enclave, and, today, serious snow-seekers rush here to experience the high-octane gut-drop of scaling its plunging topography.

This season, if you’re seeking out the slopes in this small slice of western France, we recommend you set up base at this singular getaway, a contemporary chalet that offers both ski and escape during the winter months – and one that is available via August, the leading provider of co-owned holiday homes located across Europe.

Though the usual hallmarks of blondewood panelling and panoramic views typical of properties of this ilk are incorporated here, Alpine-design cliché’s are avoided – instead, to keep the fit-out looking modern and clean-cut, plush rugs and slender fixtures and furniture, including Shaker-style seating, are festooned throughout the open-plan living space; and a warm scheme has been introduced into the bedrooms, with swathes of richly saturated greens, deep blues, and reds incorporated into the interiors.

Despite the refined aesthetic, a down-home, relaxed feel still remains; notably, the replacement of a bulky staircase with a slender alternative has opened up the dining area to accommodate eight guests, all of whom can enjoy mountain fare while ogling views of the landscape through the full-height balcony doors. The lounge, also, is anchored by an open fireplace – an inviting space for family and friends around which to gather – and the mezzanine features a sleeping nook ideal for post-exploring slumber.

Below the shared spaces are three ensuite double-bedrooms, the main one of which lays claim to a sizeable terrace from where guests can enjoy early-morning coffees or après-ski libations, all the while taking in the vistas ahead.

Additionally, although perfect for the skiing and winter-sports season, this beautiful bolthole is equally superlative in the warmer summer months, when the Alpine village teems with travellers looking for fresh air, clear landscapes, and green hiking trails.

For something with a more rural feel, August’s ‘Premium Collection’ will soon offer a fully renovated ski chalet located at an altitude 1000m up in the heart of the French Alps.

So, if you want to own a chalet such as these two, as well as four other homes across Europe from €380,000, find out more below…
