Aston Martin have vanquished the curse of the convertible

The new Vanquish S Volante proves that soft-top supercars can be even better than the originals

If you didn’t think the Aston Martin Vanquish S, the British carmaker’s newest grand tourer model thfinaat began deliveries in December, was beautiful enough already, feast your eyes on the new convertible form.

The Vanquish S Volante is, simply put, stunning. Whilst the convertible version of the new Vanquish S was announced alongside the coupe’s reveal last November, we haven’t been sure what it’ll look like until now.

And, with the patchy track record of supercars cutting the roofs off their cars, you’d be forgiven for exhaling a massive sigh of relief when Aston finally revealed what’s in store. With a retractable soft top, and the same 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12 still producing 595bhp, this latest addition to your dream garage is a treat.

But the roof isn’t the only difference. Despite the hard-top model only zooming around British roads for a little over a month, mechanically Aston have overhauled the S Volante. A revised intake system, the brand says, will create stronger power delivery further up the rev range and make driving this open-topped supercar funner even with the roof up.

The usual 8-speed Touchtronic transmission has also been tweaked, with faster shift times promised, and the suspension has had a full re-tune to sharpen ride quality and handling in race mode.

It’s nice to see that the newest Volante isn’t all about lifestyle – as occasionally the desire for a showy convertible overshadows the engineering when it comes to design. But, despite all this hard work under the bonnet, that’s not to say that Aston’s newest recruit isn’t beautiful. It is.

Sharp design tweaks can be seen on the fixed-roof sibling, and exposed carbon fibre crops up everywhere from the rear diffuser to the new front splitter. Don’t miss those futuristic quad exhaust outlets, either. With no price as of yet, expect it to be priced a little higher than the coupe, which at the moment retails for just shy of £200,000. As we said – dream garage.
