The organisers of the Harper’s Bazaar party at New York Fashion Week in that fateful year of 2018 probably had a much more chilled evening in mind. Held at the Plaza Hotel — itself no den of iniquity — the venerable magazine bosses must have thought their bash would create some nice pictures, there’d be gushing over a few chic outfits, and then bed at a reasonable hour. What they could never have anticipated was the event descending into a full-scale brawl and the police arriving to see missiles flying through the air like so many arrows at Agincourt.
At this point the rapper Cardi B, you might remember, was mid-beef with Nicki Minaj — the circumstances are now immaterial — and hostilities had escalated to boiling point. Just after the red carpet closed, the two stars had it in the hotel’s ballroom. Witnesses said Minaj stepped on Cardi’s train, tearing her Dolce & Gabbana gown, upon which Cardi took off one of her high heels and hurled it at her rival, shouting unrepeatable profanities. In the scuffle, the Bodak Yellow singer was elbowed by security and bruised over her left eye.
