The tech world runs at a preposterously fast pace, with new releases and stories popping up on a daily basis. In an effort to help you keep up, we’ve dug through the dirt to find the 6 most essential tech stories in the world this week.
Several months after a spate of spontaneously-combusting Galaxy Note 7 phones prompted both a global recall and a PR disaster (even resulting in owners of the handset not being allowed to take them on planes), Samsung this week released a detailed investigation, which shows how one of their manufacturing lines produced the misshapen batteries which led to the fires.
The Facebook founder testified in court this week over his acquisition of Oculus, the company behind the much-hyped Rift virtual reality system. Software publisher ZeniMax launched a $2bn lawsuit against the social media mogul, alleging the theft of trade secrets during the development of the Rift headset.
Currently codenamed ‘iPhone X’, Apple’s next smartphone model is expected to ditch the home button for a ‘full-face’ OLED display. However, this was widely touted as a design for the recent 7 handset, so we’re not holding our breath.
Amazon’s ambitious plans for the future have been unveiled this week, with details of two recent patents going public. The first is a large-scale transport machine made of smaller drones that can detach themselves at will. The second, an airship that functions as an airborne warehouse for Amazon stock.
Donald Trump got a significant boost in his Twitter followers this week, as former President Barack Obama handed over the keys to the White House’s official account, @POTUS. It so far seems marked by fewer outbursts than Trump’s personal handle, being largely run by his new Director of Social Media, Dan Scavino Jr.
Despite some unimpressed shareholders, Nintendo’s new gaming hardware looks set to become this year’s must-have entertainment console. Release date March 3rd – we’ll keep you posted.
