6 hangover cures that actually work

When the day after the night before is just too much...

Did thirsty Thursdays get out of hand last night, gentlemen? Did after drink works evolve into something a little more unbridled? Don’t worry – if you’ve still not recovered, we’re here to help. There are many tricks and tips that purport to heal your hangover, so allow us to separate fact from fiction.

Why it works: Avocado is full of the right kinds of fats, which will settle the stomach and soak up any unwanted alcohol. Toast is a great dense carbohydrate to consume and will help with the nausea and salt will make you thirstier, encouraging you to consume more liquids which will help flush everything else.

What you need: Groundbreaking, but an avocado, lemon juice, salt and bread.

Why is works: Drinking alcohol the day after a hangover is proven to help settle your liver and encourage you to feel slightly better. The trick is to keep it to one, two at maximum. Don’t get drunk. And make it the best Bloody Mary you’ve ever drunk with this recipe.

What you need: Mix all of the below together in a tall glass with plenty of ice. If you have a a shaker, use that. If not, stir vigorously.

  • 2 parts Grey Goose vodka
  • 4 parts organic tomato juice
  • ½ part fresh lemon juice (to taste)
  • 4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 dashes of Tabasco (or hot pepper sauce)
  • Pinch of fleur de sel (or sea salt)
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Some cubed ice
  • To garnish: Celery, ground black pepper and fresh aromatic herbs

Why is works: One of the most underrated hangover cures of all time, the Electric Current Fizz helps for more reasons than just its alcohol content. The sugar, the egg and the lemon all contribute to detoxing and calming the body back into its natural state – and the gin doesn’t hurt either.

What you need: Use a mixer to shake up all the ingredients and pour into a tall glass of ice and top up what you have with some soda water. Season to personal preference with Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt and pepper.

  • Lots of ice
  • The juice of half a lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of icing sugar
  • 1 shot of gin
  • 1 egg white
  • Soda water

Why it works: First off, this is a seriously simple recipe. So if you’re feeling so bad that you genuinely don’t have the energy to find a cocktail maker or get together any serious ingredients, this is the perfect one for you. The ingredients inside the Fernet are filled with all of the right kinds of roots, herbs and spices that will keep everything settled. Coke is an age-old hangover cure so mix the two together and you’ve got a recipe to help your hangover.

What you need: It’s not rocket science: all you need is a Fernet and the rest Coke.

Why it works: Hear me out on this one. It might not be the most masculine thing you can drink, but it’s genuinely one of the best hangover cures there is. Ginger has long been used in traditional medicine to settle the stomach if you’re nauseated, and the sugar in honey will just generally make the day more bearable.

What you need: About a thumb of fresh grated ginger, some high quality honey (if you can, try Manuka as it has antibacterial properties) and a squeeze or two of fresh lemon and some fresh mint. The lemon speeds up the detoxing process tenfold and the mint adds to the taste.

Why it works: This might seem like a bit of an odd one, but there are a number of reasons why miso soup works well for a hangover. The combination of the saltiness of ingredients, the fluid from the soup and the potassium, vitamins and magnesium from the ingredients can all contribute to settling your stomach by keeping nausea at bay and sending you on your way to feeling like a new man.

What you need: Simmer the water over a medium heat. While it starts to simmer, place 2 of the tablespoons of miso paste into a separate bowl. Whisk until smooth and set to the side. Add in your greens, scallions and tofu into the water and cook for 5 minutes. Reduce it to a low heat, and cook for another 5 minutes.

  • 5 cups of water
  • Half a cup of chopped spinach, kale or chard
  • 2 spring onions
  • Half a cup of chopped tofu or chicken
  • 3 tablespoons of white miso paste
