Winter fashion mistakes to avoid
Words: India Gladstone
Winter is a tricky time of year; it’s freezing, it’s dark, there are no looming summer escape plans and everyone just becomes a little more miserable. You’re a gentleman though, and it’s important to ensure that your persona is kept intact during all seasons – including winter. Don’t be that guy who complains, who looks miserable and – most importantly – don’t allow your sartorial sophistication to slide during the winter months. While we understand that temperatures have dropped and that you don’t want to be cold when you step out, that doesn’t mean that you have to make fashion sacrifices. As a gentleman, you need to remember that the glass is always half full and that winter is an opportunity to look amazing, not a season to be dreaded.
LAYERING – IN THE WRONG WAY
Layering is key during winter; it’s probably the only way to look great whilst staying warm. Unfortunately though, there are some people who just get the look completely wrong. The art of layering is incredibly important to get right – and also incredibly uncomplicated.
However, doesn’t just involve chucking a jumper over a t shirt (please don’t let the neck of your t shirt show under your jumper), and it does need careful consideration. Yes, a jacket underneath a coat does work – in fact, it’s a great look to adopt. Cardigans shouldn’t be shunned either; but there are definitely styles to avoid and styles to work with and they also look great layered up with a jacket or an overcoat. The rules of layering are simple; don’t overdo it, experiment with your look, don’t go too colour/pattern crazy and don’t be afraid to mix a knit/cardigan and a jacket together. Start with this.

WEARING THE WRONG ACCESSORIES
This is something that we see being done all too commonly and something that we want to try very hard to actively discourage. You’re a gentleman, and there’s no excuse for poor accessories. Bobble hats, mittens, horrendous scarfs and even ear warmers are all accessories that we’ve seen men wear – much to our disappointment. Don’t put yourself in that category – if you’re reading this and a couple of the aforementioned accessories ring a bell, it’s time for a rethink. Accessories can make or break an outfit and if you’re a gentleman, your accessories should be making – not breaking – your outfit. We can always rely on these.

NOT BEING SARTORIALLY SENSIBLE
This is something we really don’t understand and something that we see happening all too often; men who don’t even acknowledge that it’s winter, it’s nighttime and that it’s actually really very cold. This is a particularly regular occurrence at night – we’ve genuinely seen men walking around in sub-zero temperatures wearing a t shirt. If this is you, listen up: not only are you going to catch the death of you (sorry to sound like your mother) but you also actually look ridiculous. It’s not cool – let alone gentlemanly – to walk around in a t shirt. You look silly boy, put on some clothes. Club Monaco are an old reliable.
