We Like – The Mercedes A Class

For some time now the Mercedes A Class has been considered the runt of the litter, however this is all about to change. Whilst most of the attention is on the undoubtedly beautiful and powerful SLS AMG Gull Wing, the new A-Class has barely been noticed.

It is no longer just a city car, Mercedes have given it some serious surgery, both inside and out. In terms of looks this car is now competing with rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. In our view we think it is the best looking out of all three.

One of the major differences is that the new model is now a foot lower, giving the whole car a much sportier look. The new model will also feature an optional 1.6L and 1.8L in both petrol and diesel, these will be capable of producing between 100bhp and 160bhp. Whilst this is good, we are expecting the release of an AMG version within the year to rival that of the Volkswagen Golf R32 and the Audi S3. The Interior of the new A-Class has a really sporty feel and AMG look to it, with sports bucket seats and carbon fiber trim.

What really makes this car stand out is the technology. Mercedes have embraced Apple instead of trying to do their own thing. On the dash board there is an iPad like screen on which you can download apps with and use Apple’s Siri to give Voice commands.

In terms of performance the new A-Class will have a top speed of 155 mph and the larger engine model, the 220 CDI, will have an output of 170 hp. All of the engines in the new A-Class will feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. Whilst this may be good for the environment; personally we think this function slightly ruins the driving experience. In regards to the transmissions, the engines can either be combined with the new six-speed manual transmission or, as an option, with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

With great looks, both inside and out, combined with great technology, the new A-Class has all the making of a great car. It is expected to be on sale in the UK later this year and the AMG version is expected to follow on after and rumored to have 300bhp on tap. This should produce plenty of driver thrills, providing the chassis lives up to Mercedes promise. In regards to price it is expected to start from £20,000. mercedes-benz.com
