Two legends in their respective fields are coming together to craft two limited-edition timepieces, built to commemorate 50 years since one of Carroll Shelby’s most iconic victories. Combining the elegance of Baume & Mercier and the engineering prowess of Shelby, these chronographs will form part of the sport-led Capeland collection.
Paying tribute to the innovative 427 Cobra, the most feared muscle car to grace the tarmac, in every detail, both the 18k red gold and steel models perfectly capture the spirit, raw power and unyielding grace of the car. Of course, the Baume & Mercier excellence is imprinted all over the pieces in question.
The attention to detail, as you’d expect from both involved in the partnership, is impeccable and in fitting tribute to the legend of Carroll Shelby. The 44mm diameter chronographs feature counters that hark back to the Cobra’s unmistakable dashboard, whilst the minute and hour hands are designed in the shape of the Cobra’s steering wheel, with the iconic logo forged onto the second hand. The dial itself is finished in the Guardsman Blue racing color, with subtle Shelby double racing stripes down the middle as homage. Carroll’s own signature is laser-engraved on the back’s sapphire crystal, offering a glimpse at the masterful, Swiss-made self-winding movements.
The 18k Red Gold Flyback Chronograph, requires a 16.5mm thick case due to the added flyback function, which compares to the 14.9mm on the steel model. The black alligator strap is offset by an 18k red gold buckle, as well as a Cobra blue round-scale alligator lining and red stitching; every touch is bathed in pure luxury. Limited to a run of 98 numbered pieces, in tribute to Carroll’s racing number, those who purchase the 18k red gold will also receive a book detailing the full history of the Cobra.
The steel model is also limited but to a run of 1,965-pieces in homage to the year in which Carroll Shelby won the championship. This chronograph is partnered with an elegant, premium black alligator with red calfskin rubber-like lining, grey stitching and triple-folding clasp. Both watches arrive in special packaging with an exclusive miniature of the 427 Cobra, custom brochure and card in tow.
Baume & Mercier’s Capeland Shelby Cobra collection is set to be in selected stores come June. Like the 427 Cobra though, don’t expect them to wait around for long.
