Summer Wardrobe Essential – The Polo Shirt
Words: Charlie Thomas
There are few items in the modern gent’s wardrobe that are as versatile and timeless as the polo shirt. A garment that exudes casual sophistication at its very best, the polo shirt was born and nurtured within the sporting world, donning the backs of the finest tennis and yes, you guessed it, polo players throughout the 20th century. Not just a preppy staple though, the polo shirt was favoured by the Modernist and skinhead sub-cultures of the 60s and 70s and as such, if worn in a certain way it can give off an edgier, more distinct look.
Today, polo shirts come in a wide variety of cuts, colours and fabrics and the fact that they are so readily available season-on-season speaks volumes of their ability to forgo momentary trends. Fashion-forward examples are very easy to pick up though, but we’d recommend that you stick to classically styled, well-made polos before you splurge on that wallet-busting statement piece.
SUNSPEL RIVIERA POLO SHIRT, An English heritage label that has been around since 1860, Sunspel know a thing or two about fine craftsmanship and precise quality. Their Riviera polo shirts are perhaps the antithesis of what the brand is all about; luxury, simplicity and everyday wearibilty. When purchased in navy you simply can’t go wrong, and if it’s good enough for Daniel Craig’s James Bond it’s good enough for us, surely?, , Sunspel T Shirt, £80 from sunspel.com

ORLEBAR BROWN TERRY TOWELLING POLO SHIRT, For something slightly more unusual, at least in terms of texture, this example by Orlebar Brown should fit the bill. Made from a towelling material and with a nonchalant open-neck placket, it will take you from beach to bar in effortless style and comfort., White Polo Shirt, £95 from orlebarbrown.co.uk

BURBERRY LONDON KNITTED SILK POLO SHIRT, If you want to venture into the often-daunting world of pattern then it’s a good idea to keep it subtle, at least to begin with. This luxurious knitted silk polo by Burberry acts as a great introduction with its simple navy and white design, but it’s the material that really makes it – silk is lightweight, breathable and feels great against the skin., Striped Polo Shirt, £350 from mrporter.com
