Fitness regimes typically promise a few select things: being able to run further, lift heavier, a smaller stomach, etcetera, etcetera. One aspect that is often dismissed, however, is range of movement, being able to stretch and contort in a more comfortable manner. In other words, flexibility and mobility.

Unlike running for 26.2 miles or deadlifting 200kg, although both still incredible feats, a touch more flex in your major muscles will noticeably improve your day-to-day life; whether that be sitting down for longer periods, your recovery after a heavy session with the weights, or, quite frankly, your performance in the bedroom.

So give up one session a week working on #gains and chugging a carefully blended cocktail of protein, creatine and dextrose in favour on working on becoming the manifestation of Stretch Armstrong. Not only will you be better for it outside of the gym, your other exercise will likely improve as a result – there’s a reason athletes spend as much time stretching as they do training.

The Gentleman’s Journal has teamed up with the experts at Matt Roberts Personal Training to put together a guide on the exercises and stretches that will help your elasticity, worth a session in themselves or at the start and end of your usual routine.
