A winter getaway is pretty high on many people’s priorities right now, but for so many the ideal turns out to be a far cry from reality. The cramped flights, endless delays, and general stresses that characterise modern-day travel are hardly an appealing prospect for any gentleman in search of that winter break. But, rest assured, it is possible to create the sort of travel experience that leaves you returning rested, with your reputation still intact.
Travel style
Dressing appropriately for travel, particularly flying, is a difficult art to perfect. You not only have to consider style, but comfort and temperature too – for when air conditioning is turned down to sub-zero temperatures or queueing temperatures reach unbearable heights. But practicality should never mean shabby, and even flying will never act as an excuse not to be well turned-out, gentlemen.

Luggage
Quality luggage is a fundamental component in any gentleman’s travels. If you want what’s inside to arrive looking fit for purpose, you will have to invest in a bag that is too. Whether carry-on or hold luggage, decent luggage will not only stand the test of time, but is an essential accessory for a gentleman on his travels too. Dragging a battered canvas bag behind you will undo all the good work achieved by a well-chosen outfit, as well as destroying any attempt at careful folding.

Arrive in style
Have your arrival planned. Whether it be car hire, internal flight or a more statement arrival (a helicopter transfer from airport to hotel will always go down well), make sure you have a plan for getting off the plane that doesn’t involve hours hanging around in a foreign airport. The start of any holiday is important, so don’t leave it to chance.

Food
Fine dining is essential in any memorable holiday, and it is up to any gentleman to ensure that this standard is achieved. Whether it be rich skiing cuisine or fresh seafood, make sure that wherever you go you sample something a little out of the ordinary.

Manners
You might be leaving the country, but don’t think that you can leave good British manners behind as well. Whether it be in the airport, on the plane, or in a hotel, don’t earn yourself the status of the nightmare client. No amount of delays or inefficiency gives you the licence to lose your manners. Be courteous in queues, friendly to fellow passengers and remain calm and courteous to all. You will find behaving like a gentleman makes your travels pass that bit more smoothly.

Know your stuff
Nobody’s encouraging you to spend the entire holiday spouting memorised facts about each location, but a bit of background knowledge and evident interest will go down well with travel-companions and locals alike, as well as invaluable in getting the most out of a location. If you don’t think that there’s anything of interest to look into, perhaps you need to take a look at some of the more inspiring destinations the world has to offer.

Travel accessories
If you’ve got a long journey, or have simply had a more than ordinarily stressful few weeks, ensure you arrive looking well-rested by getting yourself a quality eye mask. Combine that with some noise-cancelling ear phones and give yourself the best chance of arriving looking and feeling well-rested and ready to make the most of your time away. If this is unrealistic, make sure you have a pair of sunglasses handy to hide the post-flight fatigue.

How to fly
Going long-haul and/or flying at some ungodly hour? Getting out of the economy crush makes all the difference, not just in getting that extra bit of legroom on the flight but for the pre-flight lounge and the service you receive. Its far easier to be a gentleman when you are made to feel like one, rather than a sardine in a tin. Use those air miles and get yourself an upgrade if at all possible.

Travelling tech
Use technology to your advantage. With apps to help coordinate your packing, defeat jet-lag, discover hidden gems of local cuisine, and even find your nearest free wifi, travelling like a gentleman is being made easier and easier. Utilise such resources and ensure your winter travels go smoothly.

Entertainment
Be it during your journey or by the pool, a gentleman should be able to keep himself entertained in a way that doesn’t involve endless gaming on his phone. Our recommendation is, of course, the latest copy of The Gentleman’s Journal.
