With a history and headquarters situated in the Le Locle mountains, the centre of Swiss watchmaking, Tissot is a brand that doesn't need to look far to embrace nature. And that it does. Its latest release, the PRC 100 Solar, is a watch that is inspired by one of the wonders of the natural world: the sun.
First introduced in the mid-2000s, the PRC 100 (an abbreviation for "Precision, Robustness, Classic.") was hailed a masterpiece because of its striking appearance - a dodecagonal bezel made it stand out among Tissot's other watches.
And the new version of Tissot's signature watch features a pioneering Lightmaster Solar Quartz movement, harnessing photovoltaic energy to fuel every second, and taking Tissot into a new era of innovation. The Lightmaster Solar Quartz technology basically uses energy from natural and artificial light (yep you don't need to spend your day outside to get this one going) that passes through a crystal construction and into a hidden honeycomb-structure that features solar cells beneath the dial. According to Tissot, just ten minutes of light exposure will allow for 24 hours of battery power. Meanwhile, a full solar charge would cause the watch to run for 14-months. When the watch is running low on sun-fuelled energy, the second hand will jump every 4 seconds indicating that the watch needs light exposure.
There are five versions of the new Tissot PRC 100 Solar, each coming with a 39mm case. The stainless-steel models come in two variations: a silver sunray dial or a deep blue dial. There's a versatile, full-black model with a matching bracelet, while two different leather-strap options offer contemporary takes on a classic look: stainless steel paired with brown leather, or full black with a smooth black leather strap. On each, the Tissot logo is displayed at 12 o’clock, while a PRC 100 collection stamp sits at 6 o’clock.
What's more, even after sun fall, the timepiece illuminates. Each watch comes with a sunray brushed finish, applied indexes, and Super-LumiNova detailing for optimal legibility in low-light conditions.
And just like the sun, it's a powerful watch. It houses a F06.615 Quartz Swiss Made movement, which is renowned for its precision.
