The Pick: A beach shirt fit for a gentleman
Words: Hamish Roy
The beach shirt is a much-maligned style, suffering from an association with lurid patterns and the socks-and-sandals-wearing tourist. When done correctly, however, it’s a distinctly wearable option that will take you from beach to bar and beyond, pairing well with shorts and trousers alike.
The Rockland, a new, short-sleeved offering from master shirtmakers Turnbull & Asser, is based on a historically important archive design. Dubbed Garment 57, the original shirt was part of a bespoke order made for a pilot during World War Two. In recognition of its importance, the prized shirt was later returned to the brand for safekeeping.
Refined and retro-styled, the Rockland epitomises laid-back elegance, pairing the informality of the tellingly named ‘resort collar’ and double breast pockets with a sophisticated cloth. Cut in navy spotted cloth, it stays true to the silhouette of the ’50’s with a short, boxy fit. Pair yours with a pale trouser and premium espadrilles for a Riviera-ready look.
