The New Macbook: making the impossible possible

I don’t know about you, but I find keeping abreast of Apple’s latest innovations pretty exhausting. Maybe it’s because I’m not exactly tech savvy – I’ve usually just got up to speed with one piece of iWizardry when, lo and behold, the next appears. This puts me in a position of feeling as if I have an equal profundity for technology as my benign mother.

I know there’s still a world I’ve yet to discover with my current Macbook Air, but now I’m behind once more, as with the launch of Apple’s newest model – “the future of the notebook” – it’ll only be a matter of months before it’ll become as relevant as a dinosaur in the Victorian era.

Apple set out to do the impossible with this addition to the range, the MacBook, reimagining every element to make it not only lighter and thinner, but also better than anything else within their portfolio – and anything else on the market for that matter. Now just 13.1mm and 0.9kgs, it’s like carrying a piece of A4 paper.

At first glance it may look fairly similar to its soon-to-be obsolete cousin, the MacBook Air, but each essential part has undergone a total redesign. From scratch.

“It’s a great piece of equipment,” says Charles Arthur, technology editor at The Guardian newspaper. “It does everything well and has an attractive subtlety to its appearance. It’s light, the keyboard is very accurate and the design is extremely elegant – it ticks all the boxes. It’s ideal for those who move around a lot or work on the go.”

For those who get a little giddy about tech, there is plenty to quench your thirst… Every key uses a special butterfly mechanism to improve stability and control; there is an LED under each letter and symbol to deliver a cleaner and more refined look; and the screen has a resolution of 2304×1440. (I have no idea what the latter means either, but roughly translated: the picture is as sharp as cut glass.)

From here on the specs dive beyond the depths of my conception, with a taptic engine and Force Touch trackpad running the show. One thing is for sure, however. Those of you familiar with Apple will be impressed. Those new to their ways will be astounded.

Key facts:, Depth: 13.1mm, Weight: 0.9kgs, Screen: 12 inches, 17% larger keys, 40% thinner key assembly, 9 hours battery life
