10 pieces of technology we could be seeing in the next few years
Words: Honor Scott
With the technological world moving at the rate it is, things that just short years ago we viewed as the inventions of science fiction will soon be a part of a gentleman’s everyday life. Take a look at these soon-to-be-realities and make sure you are amongst the first to know.
ARTIFICIAL GILLS

Admittedly these are still in the early stages of development, but Israeli company Like-A-Fish began testing a prototype in 2006 and is currently working to overcome the issues of size, weight and battery to make this childhood imagination come true.
SUNSCREEN PILLS
Potentially available in the next year or so, these pills will be able to protect the skin as well as the eyes by taking inspiration from the way coral reefs shield themselves from the sun. The more fair-skinned amongst us can rejoice at the prospect of significantly less stressful holidays.
REAL-TIME GOOGLE EARTH

This doesn’t really need much explanation. Simply the next step in the wonder that allows us to take a look around any area on earth; space scientists are developing cameras which will enable us to swap those blurry images for a crystal clear live feed.
BIONIC HANDS WITH SENSE OF TOUCH
Far from being something solely restricted to science fiction, this is something that has actually already been created. By connecting the hand to the nerves in an amputee’s upper arm, it enables them to give sensory feedback to the brain and therefore feel lifelike sensations from their fingers. Whilst the power to crush rocks isn’t yet within reach, this is pretty incredible, and will hopefully be commercially available in the next 10 years.
REVOLVING TOWER IN DUBAI

Not only up to the city’s extravagant standards, but this development will actually have practical applications. 59 independently rotating floors will give a constantly shifting view, as well as a constantly-changing exterior, and the wind turbines between each floor will create enough energy to supply the tower and several other buildings with power.
DRONE DELIVERY

Google plans to have a system up and running in 2017, and with Amazon Prime Air next, or even same day delivery could be a thing of the past with 30 minutes or less being the new waiting time for your online orders.
SMART HOUSES
Whilst there might already be elements to modern houses worthy of the term as ‘smart’, this futuristic concept will be extended and improved in coming years. It’s apparently only a matter of time before we are having full on conversations with our houses; the work being done now is simply stabilising the developed technology for consumers.
HEALING LASER PENS
Portable pens that would enable you to seal any wound made to the body; these are expected to hit the market within the next couple of years. The benefits (aside from the being able to effectively heal yourself anywhere, at any time) include a faster healing process and minimal scarring.
JET PACK H202

Jet Pack International are working away at creating a jet pack which, powered by hydrogen peroxide, will allow users to travel at 77 miles per hour and at up to 250 feet. Although the best they have at the moment is only capable of a just a 33 second flight, this signals exciting things to come from this sphere.
AEROFEX AERO-X

As soon as 2017, the Aero-X could be giving reality to the no-roads idea, which so far we only associate with Back to the Future. Driving like a motorbike with hovercraft elevation up to 10 feet off the ground, it is actually available for pre-order for a refundable $5,000 deposit.
