Words: Charlie Gardiner-Hill
This year’s Henley Royal Regatta, held from Wednesday 2nd July – Saturday 5th July, will feature a very special addition to what is already one of the highlights of Britain’s social and sporting season. The Lanson Supper Club, an exclusive pop-up restaurant open for the four days of the regatta only, will be located on the first floor of the Upper Thames Rowing Club with panoramic views over the river racecourse and spectator enclosures below.
The restaurant will serve a unique set menu, developed with the aim of complimenting the fizz and flavour of Champagne Lanson’s finest cuvées. The mind behind the gastronomy is Executive Chef Oliver Rowe, the acclaimed restaurateur behind former London favourite Konstam and winner of ‘TimeOut’s best restaurant’ award, who will be serving up four courses to accompany a nuanced selection of Lanson’s best – both from the flute and in cocktails.
Rowe’s carefully considered menu cleverly pairs a selection of Lanson’s best with complimentary British food, the grilled marinated mackerel with gooseberry compote alongside Lanson Extra Age Blanc des Blancs looks particularly inspired. Both lunch and dinner are available from Wednesday through till Saturday from £150 per head, with gala evenings on Friday and Saturday at £200 and £250 respectively.
A table at the one-off venue, either as an 8 or a 12, will set the lucky few above the heads of the crowds and leave them free to enjoy the company of their guests and the thrill of the racing. Guests will also have access to the exclusive Henley Champagne and Cocktail Club, a shaded retreat from the thronging crowds and one of the highlights of last year’s regatta.
Whilst guests at both the Friday and Saturday evenings will be treated to a champagne and canapé reception, the Saturday evening is set to be one of the most sought after tickets of the year. With no expense spared, the organiser Jacobs Chase will host a spectacular after party on the rowing club’s balcony beneath the final act of the Royal Regatta, the legendary fireworks.
Henley a crowded affair, thousands flock to rowing’s most prestigious event, and the chance to enjoy the regatta’s visceral sporting entertainment whilst Oliver Rowe and Lanson lay on a feast shouldn’t be passed up lightly.
