With August, as they now say, having slipped away like a bottle of wine, it’s that time of year to begin tinkering with the wardrobe in preparation for the coming in-between period of cool, breezy days: merino knits for T-shirts; sturdy leather sneakers for two-strap sandals; denim jackets for suede jackets. And, of course, the biggest switch-up will be that of shorts to lightweight trousers.
Now, with this in mind, the Amsterdam-based MR MARVIS has recently unveiled a new collection of trousers – The Five-pockets – adding to its rich selection of menswear staples and continuing its evolution from a shorts-only venture to a purveyor of all-seasons essentials. (The label has stated that, in 2023, its trousers outsold its shorts, a notion that firmly underlines this shift.)

Produced from premium denim, each offering within the range is stonewashed and garment-dyed in order to create a faded, slightly worn-in patina, and there is a selection of nine colourways to cover all occasions and settings, ranging from a classic Cosmics tone (dark blue), to a rich Reserves (dark burgundy), up to a lighter Baristas (dark sand) – options that add a touch of subtle colour and vibrancy into the transitional season, but don’t make a loud statement.
The pared-down appearance also makes sure that everything is kept in check and appropriate for regular wear.
As with MR MARVIS's denim collection – billed as The Jeans – The Five-pockets have a tapered silhouette, but there is a little stretch thanks to a blend of organic cotton and a touch of elastane – details that, once again, add to the everyday appeal.
There are five pockets – hence the name, of course – including coin pocket detailing, and it’s all rounded off by a faux-leather patch on the back, complete with the words MR MARVIS, and an engraved front button and metal rivets (also bearing the same lettering).
Given their classic style, we’d recommend pairing The Five-pockets with something equally timeless – for breezier days, perhaps try the Oysters pullover, complete with ribbed collar and cuffs; or, for those mercurial September moments when the temperatures rise, fall back on a Wimbledons T-shirt, the bedrock of any man’s wardrobe.
