This season, Luca Faloni shines a light on the finest, most versatile pieces in its range, and, in doing so, the celebrated maker of timeless menswear takes us on a grand tour across the Italian landscape. Notably, there are knits and zip-ups made across a cluster of areas in the north, including Bergamo, and there’s newly introduced denim crafted in Padua – but, despite being made in different locales and by various craftspeople, all pieces are tied together by the superlative skill gone into making them and by their enduring appeal that will help provide the building blocks for any permanent capsule wardrobe.
Since the get-go, Luca Faloni has made a name for itself as a champion of fine craftsmanship whose design approach has always been underpinned by its ‘Made in Italy’ label. As such, the materials used in its collection are sourced from some of the oldest, most celebrated mills on the peninsula: brushed cotton from Grandi & Rubinelli, a weaving mill near Milan known for its textile expertise; and full-grain leather from Santa Croce, in Tuscany, a region celebrated for this material. Most notably, perhaps, is the use of pure cashmere and silk-cashmere from Cariaggi, which has been in operation for six decades; here, the yarn starts with the careful selection of the finest fibres of the Capra Hircus Laniger from inner Mongolia and ends with the knitting stage in Bergamo, resulting in a product that is soft, insulating and durable.
Strong ties with these producers, however, are not built on a whim – just like the wears they purvey, the relationship between Luca Faloni and this cadre of artisans has been made with longevity in mind, relying on age-old traditions, expertise and skills that have been passed down generations, all the while looking to the future by having a ‘slow fashion’ approach that prioritises quality of fabrics over trends, and thus reducing waste, and using only sustainable, durable fabrics. “We are Italian at heart, but cosmopolitan in our vision and always focused on how craftsmanship improves lifestyle,” says the brand’s founder.
So, to further emphasise this ‘buy less, but buy better’ approach, the brand has created an edit of its most classic autumn-winter items for you to consider in the coming months – a mix of knits and essentials in warming, neutral tones. For those transitional moments when a T-Shirt is not enough, but a jacket and coat might be too overbearing, consider the chunky-knit cardigan in ‘Dolomiti grey’, made in that most luscious of cashmeres knitted in Bergamo and featuring a ribbed handle that secures warmth in the upper body – its shawl collar, also, adds a dapper detailing to the overall look.
To wear underneath that, there is a rollneck in ‘lava red’ and a polo sweater in ‘camel beige’, both also in cashmere, and both equally wearable from this season all the way into spring.
When it comes to base layers, there’s a brushed-cotton shirt in ‘Topaz’ blue and a ‘peach’ cotton piqué shirt which should provide subtle pops of pastel in the coming months of grey and rain. Longsleeve T-shirts, produced in Brescia from a luxurious blend of silk and cotton, offer a great foundation when layering – either wear by itself during those autumnal days when the weather is abnormally warm, or place underneath any of the pieces of knitwear on offer.
Then, most recently introduced to the range is a pair of dark-blue jeans, whose denim has been made in Padua, just west of Venice. Slim, tapered and made with a slight stretch, they can be made casual with some logo-free sneakers or made more formal with an Oxford shirt. Additionally, neither too heavy nor too lightweight, you can fall back on this legwear throughout the year. Versatile and seasonless, it’s yet another winner that stays true to the Luca Faloni mantra of ‘Timeless Designs Proudly Crafted in Italy.’
