Cufflinks – It’s in The Details

Cufflinks – It’s in The Details

No man despised casual dressing more than my grandfather did. The earliest memories of my gentle giant are filled with images of him in three piece chequered suits and impeccably shined shoes. Wandering into his closet as a boy my eyes would widen and light up as I peeped into his wardrobe of silk ties and cashmere socks in a plethora of hues from deep scarlet and navy to magenta and canary yellow. I fondly remember the times I’d politely knock on his door and smell his cologne as he’d open the door welcoming me with his charismatic smile. During the course of the days I’d spend with him in his home, he would always be dressed as if going to a meeting with Winston Churchill, for no reason other than to set an example of what it is to be in every way, a gentleman. Though he enjoyed having the best he never displayed any trace of vanity and was sure to explain how style is in the details and how hard he had worked to enjoy the luxuries he wore so beautifully.

Although he is no longer alive I recently reflected on his philosophy as I sat in an Italian restaurant in Mayfair and watched as gentlemen entered and exited the establishment, “if you have to tell someone you’re a gentleman you’re most likely not a gentleman; one should feel the spirit of a gentleman, gentle doesn’t mean weak, quite the contrary.” I smiled as I observed the impeccably dressed men. I observed the astounding variations of silver and gold cuff links worn, adding a further important note. Cuff links add a distinctly rich and colourful variety to the ordinary suit and tie. As I left the restaurant and wandered into the tailors of Savile Row I remembered the little boy who had admired his grandfather’s style. I remembered the little boy who had wandered into his grandfather’s wardrobe. And although a lot has changed somethings will always remain the same; every detail counts – even minute blue and silver cuff links. By Cole Simmons
