Bold colours. Alternative neckwear. Velvets and satins. As we fast approach the festive party season, you’ve likely exhausted every black tie option in your wardrobe — every exciting pocket square, every quirky lapel pin, every pair of signature cufflinks that will stand you out from the monochrome crowd.
But there’s only so much you can do to add some personality to black tie’s classic look. After all, everyone else has the same pool of accessories and watches to draw on. But, here at Gentleman’s Journal, we’ve found a new way to express yourself at your next smartly-dressed soiree: Cuffs.
Simple, sleek and the ideal accessory for black tie, cuffs are the perfect way to inject some individuality into an otherwise-prescribed outfit. Here, we’ve turned to London-based jewellery brand Alex Orso to illustrate how such a simple accessory can reinvent your black tie look.
Go for gold
It’s tricky to go wrong with gold. Both a luxurious colour and material, all of Alex Orso’s gold cuffs are sterling silver plated in 22kt gold. It’s a decadent look and ever-sophisticated touch for your tux.
And, although you may already have your dress watch strapped around your wrist, a cuff brings something different to the equation. Stick with silver
Silver says something altogether different. Cooler in colour and attitude, it’s a precious metal that gives you a certain edge in an black tie scenario — less showy than gold, but sleek enough to catch the light and make an impression.

Of course, there are those of us who can’t resist making a show of an evening. And, if your dinner jacket wasn’t already flash enough, why not opt for a cuff with a bit of added sparkle?
From emeralds in silver to rubies in gold, there are a multitude of options that show your gems subtly — to ensure you don’t look too showy. But, our personal favourite has to be the discreet 3.5mm cuff inset with a brown diamond. It’s an interesting gemstone to mirror your own quirks and personality; a conversation starter wrapped around your wrist.
