The Best Moments of the BAFTAs 2014

The Best Moments of the BAFTAs 2014

Words: Violet

Last night saw the 2014 BAFTAs take place at the Royal Opera House in London. All the stars including Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Fassbender, showed up to celebrate arguably the biggest night in British cinema. Here are out best moments of the night……

STEPHEN FRY STILL REIGNS SUPREME

Proving that you don’t need to mercilessly insult everyone in the room to get a few laughs (we are looking at you Ricky Gervais), Stephen Fry was yet again one of the highlights of the night. Such gems from Fry included (when introducing Oprah) “Her performance in The Butler was so moving, I almost gave mine the afternoon off,” and (when introducing Jeremy Irons and Prince William to present an award) “For one of them, this is the nearest he’s ever been to appearing in The King and I. For the other, this is the nearest he’s ever been…to an iron.” As usual Fry waxed lyrical about anything and everything, speaking with such verbosity that at moments it wasn’t clear whether some of the audience were keeping up with his wit. He also called David O. Russell up on his incorrect use of grammar in his speech, something he joked was surprising considering he was winning an award for excellence in writing. He also lovingly called his friend, the great Emma Thompson, “a ghastly piece of sickly shrieking awful.” Brilliant.

IT’S OK TO HIGH FIVE THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE (IN TINIE TEMPAH’S WORLD)

During his opening performance, British rapper Tinie Tempah high-fived the Duke of Cambridge who was sitting in the front row. This picture of Prince William’s reaction speaks a thousand words.

ALFONSO CUARON IS REALLY FUNNY

He impressed us with his speech at the Golden Globes and again his quick wit shone through last night. When describing how he feels like an honourary Brit having lived in London for over a decade he said, “ “I guess that I make a very good case for curbing immigration.” The crowd loved it.

BEARDS ARE STILL THE ULTIMATE MAN-SESSORY

Stephen Fry, Michael Fassbender, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio all sported fine beards last night proving that, perhaps, the full fuzz is here to stay for a while longer.
