Allbirds’ first shoe was made of wool. The Wool Runner was a marvel in the footwear industry and set the standard for sustainable shoes when it was released in 2009. And today Allbirds has introduced the Wool Cruiser, a new silhouette that builds upon that aforementioned sustainable ethos, but takes things up a notch.
The Wool Cruiser, which takes the form of a retro-leaning, Nineties skate shoe, comes with a new felt upper that is 100 per cent recycled and doesn’t require the use of dye. The felt is made up of post-consumer knitwear that has been sourced from around the world, and is then sorted by colour, composition and quality by a leading textile partner in Italy. The best bit? The shoes come in a staggering range of 14 different colours, from Forest Green to Espresso. Allbirds hopes it will become a timeless wardrobe staple, with something to suit every mood, personality and style.
But Allbirds hasn’t stopped there. To celebrate the launch of the technicoloured trainers, it enlisted the help of Pantone. Because who else does colour better than Pantone, am I right? With Pantone, Allbirds has created a further five exclusive colourways: Sapphire Blue, Zesty Citron, Golden Sunshine, Vibrant Blossom and Granite Grey. “Colour gives us a way to break the rules, embrace freedom and choose our own unique style. It can turn a sneaker into a canvas for personal expression,” said Laurie Pressman, Vice President, Pantone Colour InstituteTM. “This palette is a tribute to being bold, as people turn away from homogenised looks and turn toward an exuberant aesthetic that celebrates individualism, in bold colour.”
“We wanted to capture the full spectrum of colour, and the Wool Cruiser was the perfect template. It's a simple silhouette, with material that displays colour incredibly well thanks to its depth and texture,” said Adrian Nyman, Chief Design Officer, Allbirds. “In a world of conformity, this is a style that can stand out from the crowd. It can be dressed up or down. It can be provocative or understated. We can’t wait to see the ways that consumers take this style, and turn it into something of their own.”
To celebrate the launch of the Wool Cruiser in London, Allbirds is hosting a pop-up event in Duke of York Square in Chelsea on the 13th and 14th of September. Visitors will have the opportunity to win prizes, including a brand new pair of Wool Cruisers.
The Allbirds pop-up will take place opposite the store at 54 King's Rd, London SW3 4UD and the Wool Cruiser is available to shop now at allbirds.co.uk
