5 ways to beat the Sunday blues
Words: Holly Macnaghten
The Sunday blues need no introduction. We all get them. We all know them. They come in many forms and lead to many kind of irrational thoughts and actions. But how, gentlemen, do we beat them? The Sunday blues are real, and we’re here to help, with these ways to beat them…
1. DRAG OUT THE WHOLE DAY, Don’t, as so many of us do, wake up at 11am on Sunday and start dreading Monday already – you have an entire day ahead of you to enjoy. Make plans, go out, enjoy the day in its entirety.
2. DON’T SEEK SOLACE IN ALCHOL , It might seem like a good idea to head to the pub at 6pm on a Sunday and drown your sorrows with friends and fellow feelers of the blues, but it’s never a good idea. Nothing will fill you with more dread than the knowledge that you will, without a doubt, wake up to start your working week with a hangover. If you do drink on a Sunday, keep it to lunch and early afternoons – cut it off at 6pm.
3. UN-PLUG, The best way to wind down minus the blues on a Sunday is by, wait for it… turning off your phone. Shocking! We know. In all seriousness though, turning off your phone and closing down your laptop and doing something like, shock horror, reading a book or having a non-virtual conversation is the perfect way to tune out the stress and anxiety that most of us experience on a Sunday.
4. HIT THE GYM, News flash: exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy. So, slip into your trainers and get on that rowing machine – you’ll thank us on Monday. If you can’t quite face the gym, then a run or even a walk in the park will suffice.
5. HAVE YOUR FRIENDS OVER, Starting some kind of ritual with friends on a Sunday can be an amazing way to rid that drab feeling. Whether it’s a group of you that always meet at a different person’s house for supper, or you try a new restaurant in your local area each Sunday – it’s a sure-fire way to get rid of the blues.
