It’s fair to say that air travel today has some serious perks (most of which we completely take for granted) – the joy of an unexpected up-grade will never get old, indulging in a more than ‘just edible’ meal and a soothing gin and tonic are all part of the expected experience. Topping that list, has got to be the in-flight entertainment. Remember the days when a TV screen would drop down from the ceiling and everyone had to watch the same film? No – nor do we really, we’ve all become so accustomed to personal screens, multiple channels and a range as good as our TV’s at home, but of course this was not always the case. Shocking – we know!

In 1925, lucky passengers on an Imperial Airways flight over Germany were the guinea pigs for a brand new luxury in air travel – the first in-flight movie. The film even had live orchestral accompaniment, with the help of a relatively new technology, the radio. The sound of a live orchestra was broadcast from the ground to accompany the 1925 silent film The Lost World, an extremely successful adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s book of the same name. Hard to believe that this was a luxury once, so perhaps we should think twice about complaining when we discover that we’ve already seen all 9 films that our in-flight schedule to New York has to offer us!
