THE CHERRY ORCHARD – THEATRE

Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard is playing at London’s Young Vic until November 29th and has been critically well received. Directed by Katie Mitchell, the production is an avant-garde, gothic inspired adaptation of Chekov’s most personal play.

MR TURNER – FILM

Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner provides a break from the left-wing auteur’s usual style and is a visceral and emotive portrayal of Britain’s greatest ever painter. With five-star reviews across the board, Mr Turner is this week’s must-see film.

AN UNGRATEFUL WOMAN – COMEDY

Comedienne, Bridget Christie presents An Ungrateful Woman, a hilarious and pointed insight into the female psyche, playing at the Soho theatre in central London. Well worth heading into WC2 for.

THE WITCHERY – FOOD

Edinburgh’s The Witchery is one of the most atmospheric winter restaurants and for those who find themselves hungry in ‘Auld Reekie’, this beautiful and wonderfully old-fashioned eatery would be a marvellous choice.

KING CHARLES III – THEATRE

Mike Bartlett’s new play is a highly mischievous imagining of what could happen to the Royal Family upon Elizabeth II’s death. As everyone knows, the Prince of Wales gets into many constitutional conundrums – and he gets into plenty more as king.

JEREMY DELLER: ENGLISH MAGIC – EXHIBITION

If you haven’t managed to get down to Margate to see the new Turner Centre yet, Jeremy Deller’s fascinating new exhibition is a great reason to visit. It’s a subtle exploration of Englishness through folklore, science, politics and, of course, art.

INTERSTELLAR – FILM

Released on Friday, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar has become one of the most anticipated films of the decade. It is already garnering incredulous, awe-filled critical acclaim. It is perhaps the most mind-boggling science fiction film of all time.

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO – OPERA

It’s impossible not to enjoy Mozart’s resplendent and farcical opera; The Marriage of Figaro and this ENO production at London’s Coliseum is being lauded as one that is filled with joy, gayety and slide-splitting humour.

AN IDEAL HUSBAND – THEATRE

People want laughs in the run-up to the festive period and Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband is sure to provide them. Playing at the Chichester Festival Theatre, the cast includes Edward Fox, Patricia Routledge and Jamie Glover.

SOUTHBANK CENTRE CHRISTMAS MARKET – SHOPPING

The biggest Christmas market in London opens on November 5th and dominates the Southbank with its lights, stalls and smells. Although some will argue that November is too early for a market to open, there’s a great opportunity to get Christmas shopping in early.
