Montblanc and artist David Paul Kay make their mark on London

The iconic Maison launch their “What’s On Your List?” Christmas campaign with a live art installation...

There is something inherently romantic about a fountain pen. Perhaps it is the simple act of putting pen to paper in a digital age, or perhaps it is the sincerity of signing a signature with a tool perfectly crafted for your stroke.

In 1924, Montblanc created their Meisterstück fountain pen and secured a cult status within the world of European craftsmanship. Since then, the brand have made an art of creating precious writing instruments which record the moments of your life, alongside a range of exquisite watches, to aid you in keeping track of them.

And now, their collection continues to grow, with leather products, elegant jewellery, fragrances and contemporary eyewear — making them the perfect one-stop-shop for all of your gift-buying needs.

What’s in a colour?

Montblanc’s dedication to producing perfectly functioning pieces, without compromising on beauty, has rendered them a natural collaborating partner for New York-based visual artist, David Paul Kay.

Famed for his sprawling black and white murals, mostly created using paints and markers, Kay has now launched an interactive piece of art entitled R3solutions in alliance with Montblanc.

Kay’s work has become widely recognisable for his use of monochromatic black and white.

But now, alongside the team at Montblanc, he has designed a signature colour, defining a strong shade of red — and this has allowed for R3solutions to become a particularly striking piece of interactive artwork.

For Kay, “creating black and white art is like playing the piano, bringing in the color red feels very authentic. Now that I’ve added a touch of violin to my piano, I can hear a different sound that I like. It’s my voice, my melody and my new experiences that offer my art a new dimension.”

Artistry in motion...

R3solutions takes the form of three wooden panels, painted simply in black, white and red.

The spaces in between the painted lines have been left for audiences to take a pen and write their deepest wishes within its borders — making each, unique desire a part of this living, breathing artwork.

In Kay’s own words, “artwork is never finished, because it keeps making you wonder”. Visit Montblanc’s New Bond Street boutique this holiday season to pen your wishes and be part of this loving artwork.
