For the transitional season, look to Luca Faloni’s easy, breezy springwear edit

The brand’s latest capsule softens the shift from the depths of winter to the lightness of spring

As the clocks have moved forward, the days are looking a little brighter and lot more tolerable. And with the shift in the seasons comes an adjustment of routines: it’s likely time to start replacing thick moisturisers with lighter creams; swapping nights indoors with evenings out; and folding up those insulated fisherman jumpers and your always-reliable duffle coats and bringing out lighter layers and items of pure comfort and elegant ease. And to help sort out your wardrobe for the months ahead, Luca Faloni, the renowned maker of classic menswear, has brought together a tight edit of its finest essentials for the in-between seasons.

For little under a decade, the label has centred its ethos around a firm celebration of the details that help distinguish it in the sartorial industry: its ‘Made in Italy’ spirit; an unrelenting, long-term commitment to the peninsula’s finest craftspeople and the materials with which they work; and a slow fashion philosophy that emphasises sustainable, durable quality over fads and whims. “Creating a permanent wardrobe above following trends is, for us, a fundamental step towards no waste and a sustainable clothing industry,” says Faloni himself.

For the coming season, the brand’s latest capsule draws upon its permanent ‘timeless collection’ and is tied together by a focus on lightweight yet finely crafted materials that’ll ease the shift from the depths of winter to the breeziness of spring. The cotton used, most notably, is made in collaboration with some of north Italy’s oldest artisanal mills, from Novara to Treviso. Brushed cotton shirts, for example, are crafted from long-staple Supima cotton yarns, which are double the strength of regular cotton, and Egyptian Giza, and, as a result, is resistant to damage while maintaining superior softness and breathability. Cotton piqué, meanwhile, is milled in Brescia and is defined by a diamond pattern that facilitates rich dyes and a textured touch.

The brand’s exclusive silk-cotton blend – a hybrid fabric that is pure comfort, features a natural stretch, and regulates body temperature, ideal for when the mercury rises – draws upon a raw yarn that is brought to life by Maggia, a family-operated workshop with over three centuries of expertise.

Similarly, for its silk-cashmere creations, Luca Faloni again brings together two coveted materials (Mulberry silk from China and cashmere from inner Mongolia) that are melded together by Cariaggi, a mill based in the eastern region of Marche. The final product is a smooth, refined garment that gently contours the body.

And another pillar on which the edit is made is the denim used for select shirts and jeans, which is produced via a long-standing partnership with Albini, a storied expert with nearly 150 years of experience in handling the durable textile, and whose creation process involves a double quality-control check in order to guarantee a premium finish in every creation.

Of the selection, there’s a bevy of highlights that we’ve been drawn to. For the days when a jacket or coat might be a bit too much when the spring sun starts to shine (but a t-shirt doesn’t offer ample protection), consider the lightweight silk-cashmere knitted crew neck, which is defined by its easy-on-the-eye ‘Capri’ blue hue, or the pure cashmere sweater in sky blue whose timeless, soft aesthetic hits the perfect line between business and off-duty, and perfect with a pair of chinos.

If seeking something to button up, there’s a shawl-collar chunky cardigan that is designed with a ribbed handle that secures warmth; a long-sleeve polo in a rich mustard hue evokes warm spring weather and is great for terrace dinners; the Brera polo shirt in royal-blue is equally deep in colour; and, when the temperature gets a little high, look for the short-sleeve polo, made with a lightweight silk-cotton and a comfortable fit. And, of course, one should always consider the signature linen shirt whose easygoing style – which is angled for both the city and the coast – is the epitome of Italian elegance.

To anchor your ensembles, legwear is given equal consideration – lightweight cotton chinos, most notably, come in relaxed options of navy, light grey, olive green, camel beige and white (the real crowning glories are the subtle details, such as the internal waistband that ensures your shirt remains tucked in); alfresco dinners may be the perfect time to showcase the relaxed linen trousers in a contemporary tapered silhouette; and fine denim comes courtesy of a pair of dark-blue jeans that are constructed with a natural stretch that allows for ease of movement, a feel that is neither too heavy nor too light, and a dark-aged wash that offers a characteristic, worn-in patina.

As spring is a time of year that brings to mind the notion of renewal, these timeless pieces by Luca Faloni will breathe new life into your wardrobe – not only for this season, but for the years to come.
