Whisky della settimana: Guy Ritchie e Chase presentano «Rosemaund Farm Whisky»

Guy Ritchie se ne intende di buon whisky. In The Man from U.N.C.L.E, il regista ha fatto alzare a Henry Cavill un bicchiere di Johnnie Walker Black Label su un tetto italiano. In The Gentlemen, Hugh Grant si concede un bicchierino di Glenfarclas 1976 «Grant Edition». E nella serie sequel del film, Theo James decanta un Dalmore 25 con altrettanto raffinato e brioso entusiasmo. E la prossima bottiglia che comparirà in un film di Ritchie? Probabilmente proverrà da Rosemaund Farm.
Di proprietà della famiglia Chase — quella della pluripremiata vodka —, la tenuta dell’Herefordshire ha prodotto il suo primo whisky: un single malt di 10 anni, realizzato con la storica varietà d’orzo Maris Otter e creato da Tristan Stephenson, figura di spicco del settore dei distillati. Ritchie è entrato nella società come azionista nel 2024, dopo essere stato presentato a James Dashwood Chase.
«È stato il mio socio in affari, il ristoratore Leonid Shutov, a presentarmi la famiglia Chase alla Rosemaund Farm», ci racconta Ritchie. «Sono rimasto affascinato dallo spirito avventuroso della famiglia e dai suoi valori britannici, radicati nella tradizione e nella cultura agricola. Ho iniziato a nutrire un forte interesse per il whisky intorno al 2010, quando ho rilevato il pub The Punch Bowl [a Mayfair]. Da allora, sono rimasto in attesa dell’occasione giusta per entrare a far parte di un marchio capace di ridefinire il settore».
Il nuovo distillato — e la stessa Rosemaund Farm — potrebbe comparire nei prossimi progetti di Ritchie, ma saranno disponibili per l’acquisto soltanto 2.700 bottiglie di Rosemaund Farm Whisky (tramite uno speciale sistema di sorteggio che sarà lanciato questa settimana). Ritchie racconta inoltre a Gentleman’s Journal che, a parte il grande schermo, il suo luogo preferito per vedere e sorseggiare un whisky è proprio là dove viene prodotto.
«Se c’è un momento e un luogo ideale per bere whisky, è proprio in distilleria», spiega il regista. «Nel magazzino delle botti, direttamente dalla botte e a gradazione piena. L’ambiente è pervaso dal suo aroma e dalla sua essenza. Non c’è davvero nulla di simile. Mi ha riportato ai viaggi nelle Highlands e alle distillerie del posto, dove assaggiavo distillati affinati con cura per decenni. È un’esperienza profondamente emozionante».

But how emotive is the experience of tasting Rosemaund Farm Whisky for the first time? Treated to an exclusive tasting of the latest Chase family launch, the first thing we noted of the spirit was how handsome it looked. Not only does the label evoke the distinctive frontage of Rosemaund Farm, and the stout barrel-shaped bottle offer a new silhouette for your back bar, but the liquid itself is deeper than many first-run releases from debut English whisky makers. Even at first glance, it smoulders with a richness and complexity of character — but this shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the involvement of a storyteller like Ritchie.
On the nose, it’s warming — and unmistakably English. Think bucolic thickets of oak and meadowsweet, or a tea-adjacent plateful of malted biscuits. There’s the cake-y, wintry wisp of cinnamon and nutmeg, and a hint of tart apple. The palate furthers this refined dryness, sprinkling coarse black pepper spice and ginger heat across the tongue, before reintroducing a touch of that sweet malt. And then the finish takes its time, offering hedgerow fruits and a snifter of tobacco, and drawing to a languorous, earthy close.
Come ogni degustazione di whisky, l’intera esperienza conduce in un viaggio che, proprio come un film, ha un inizio, uno svolgimento e una fine ben distinti. Eppure, a differenza di uno Scotch corposo e affumicato o di un bourbon statunitense impetuoso e spettacolare, questo è inconfondibilmente un whisky della verde e amena Inghilterra di Chase e Ritchie: impeccabile nella presentazione, dal carattere audace e senza remore, ed enigmatico fino alla fine.
