Truth is stranger than fiction – and the truth about technology is even stranger than that. Some of the stories behind our most cutting-edge, state-of-the-art innovations are beyond far-fetched, and – almost inevitably – they make for ripe, fertile ground for dramatic films and television.

In past years, we’ve seen an influx of projects, with producers taking the tales of Theranos, Uber and WeWork and developing, updating and dramatising them for peak entertainment. Rather notably, there’s a limited series in development at HBO about the rise of Facebook, titled Doomsday Machine and starring Claire Foy as COO Sheryl Sandberg.

In the meantime, there are plenty of tech start-up dramas already out there to sink your smartphones into. Here are some of our favourites…

What’s it about? In Las Vegas, 1988, video game designer Henk Rogers stumbles across Tetris, a puzzle made by Alexey Pajitnov, a Russian programmer. The encounter leads to Rogers heading to the Soviet Union to secure worldwide rights to the game, with the film eventually unfurling into espionage and high-stakes negotiations.

¿Quién aparece? Taron Egerton interpreta al bigotudo Rogers; Nikita Efremov encarna a Pajitnov; y Togo Igawa asume el papel de Hiroshi Yamauchi, director ejecutivo de Nintendo.

¿Por qué merece la pena verla? Es una película trepidante y dinámica que aporta emoción a la historia de este refinado juego.

¿De qué trata? Las ambiciosas e increíbles —y, en última instancia, delictivas— empresas de Elizabeth Holmes, que abandonó la Universidad de Stanford para crear Theranos, una empresa de tecnología sanitaria que, según afirmaba, revolucionaría los análisis de sangre.

¿Quién aparece? Amanda Seyfried asume el papel protagonista con una interpretación que ha sido calificada de «inquietante». Pero su verdadera fuerza reside en el reparto secundario, con actores como Stephen Fry y William H. Macy ofreciendo interpretaciones fascinantes.

Why’s it worth watching? If you have followed the story – and listened to the podcast – it’s a nice companion piece. If you don’t know the story, then buckle up. It’s a maddening, ludicrous, shout-at-the-television ride.

What’s it about? The first of a proposed anthology series focusing on wild business stories (the second season will zero in on Facebook and go head-to-head with HBO’s upcoming drama). This inaugural instalment is subtitled The Battle For Uber, and tells the twisty tale of the ride-sharing app.

Who’s in it? The endlessly likeable Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes on the less-than-likeable role of Travis Kalanick, with Kyle Chandler playing Bill Gurley, one of Silicon Valley’s top dealmakers. But the most intriguing piece of casting? Quentin Tarantino, who was brought on board to narrate the series.

¿Por qué merece la pena verla? Por la fascinante y excesivamente vociferante interpretación protagonista de Gordon-Levitt. Prepárate para exclamaciones sobre la codicia, las puñaladas por la espalda y frases absurdas que dan vergüenza ajena, como: «¡ESTAMOS EN EL NEGOCIO DE CAMBIAR EL MUNDO!»

¿De qué trata? No necesariamente de una empresa tecnológica emergente. Sin embargo, cuando Adam Neumann cofundó la empresa de espacios de trabajo flexibles WeWork, al principio se dirigió al personal del sector tecnológico como clientela. En cualquier caso, esta serie se centra menos en el negocio y más en la delicada relación profesional y personal de Neumann con su esposa.

¿Quién aparece? Jared Leto vuelve a transformarse, esta vez para interpretar a Neumann, con una larga melena y lentillas oscuras. Anne Hathaway interpreta con gran soltura a su esposa, Rebekah Neumann.

Why’s it worth watching? For the narcissism. There’s a little dramatic license here – but nowhere near as much as you’d expect. As you take in all the excess, the greed and the opulence, mouth undoubtedly agape, know this: more than you’ll want to believe is true.

¿De qué trata? A diferencia de las tres primeras películas de esta lista, «La red social» no es tan reciente. Probablemente ya hayas visto esta película escrita por Aaron Sorkin y dirigida por David Fincher, una recreación shakespeariana de los primeros años de Facebook.

¿Quién aparece? Como es bien sabido, Jesse Eisenberg, en el papel que lanzó su carrera. Pero el reparto secundario está igualmente a la altura, con Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake y Max Minghella, que consiguen dotar de interés y de un drama apasionante a una película sobre las redes sociales.

Why’s it worth watching? Because it’s a tale for our time. Mark Zuckerberg was the youngest billionaire in the world when The Social Network was released in 2010 – and it’s worthwhile to see how one of your most-used apps was coded to life.

¿De qué trata? Tras el éxito de La red social, el guionista Aaron Sorkin fue elegido para abordar la vida y trayectoria de otro titán tecnológico: Steve Jobs, cofundador de Apple. Y, aunque fue criticada por sus inexactitudes históricas, la película dirigida por Danny Boyle logra hacer el mismo truco de magia que La red social al conseguir que los entresijos del mundo tecnológico resulten verdaderamente dramáticos.

¿Quién aparece? Michael Fassbender consiguió el codiciado papel de Jobs, después de que, al parecer, se barajara a actores como George Clooney, Christian Bale y Leonardo DiCaprio. Seth Rogen interpreta a Steve Wozniak y Kate Winslet, a la ejecutiva de marketing Joanna Hoffman.

Why’s it worth watching? Because, unlike a normal biopic, this one plays out in three acts, a trio of potted sequences that scrub through the life of Jobs, skipping to the behind-the-scenes moments of his three biggest launches: the Macintosh 128K, the NeXT Computer and the iMac G3.

¿De qué trata? Del imparable ascenso de los videojuegos de Grand Theft Auto. Este docudrama de largometraje gira en torno a la disputa legal entre Rockstar Games —la empresa responsable de todo— y el abogado de Florida que intentó vincular delitos reales con la exaltación de la violencia en GTA.

¿Quién aparece? ¿Te creerías que Daniel Radcliffe? Con gorra de béisbol y barba, la estrella de Harry Potter interpreta al presidente de Rockstar Games, Sam Houser, junto a Bill Paxton, que encarna al abogado Jack Thompson.

¿Por qué merece la pena verla? Porque está dirigida por Owen Harris, quien posteriormente dirigió tres de los mejores episodios de Black Mirror —«Ahora mismo vuelvo», «San Junípero» y «Víboras estridentes», también centrado en los videojuegos.
