Snaps & Rye restaurant review

We’re all about a big fry up the morning after the night before. However, sometimes you want something that makes you feel better about skipping your spin class because your head feels like it may just explode. For this we prescribe a Scandinavian brunch courtesy of Snaps & Rye; the latest, and most likely the only, contemporary Danish eatery in Notting Hill.

The Scandinavian influences here are apparent from the moment you step in. The neutral tones, quiet art and minimalist design furnishings are straight from the dreams of Ingvar Kamprad. It is this air of refinement that translates onto each plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

This deli specialises in Smørrebrød, which is a dense, organic rye topped with such delicacies as cured meats, soft-boiled eggs, house-cured herring and ‘Rullepølse’. Don’t worry we had to Google it too. Our personal favourite was the house-cured salmon, which maintained a fresh lightness often lost with farm sourced fish.

Outside these meticulous open sandwiches, other offerings include a selection of Danish pastries and cakes, along with more hearty options including the nation’s favourite… meatballs. For drinks, their exclusive brand of Danish birch sap water (because coconut water is so 2013) is a light and refreshing drink that has just the nutrients your broken body needs… probably. However, if hair of the dog is more your thing, there’s home-infused Akvavit snaps and Danish beers on offer too.

Also worth a look in is their mini-shop filled with Danish goods. It’s the perfect opportunity to build your new Scandi-life from their carefully curated starter pack. There’s suitably dainty, white crockery, cooking books and foodstuffs; 80% of which seems to include liquorice. You must shake off any preconceptions of liquorice brought upon by the dreaded Bassets Allsorts Man and Sambuca shots however. The Danish style liquorice here is soft, delicate and in many cases covered in chocolate. Trust us, it’s delicious!

With takeaway options and an evening menu in the works, we can see this place only getting more popular, so for those looking to escape London’s obsession with pulled pork and deep fried Oreos take heed. Combining refined food and minimalist design; Snaps & Rye is proof that Danes do it better.
