The global capitals of style are sometimes said to be Milan, Paris, London; perhaps New York; Naples if you’re fond of a patch pocket; Tokyo for meticulous denims; Los Angeles if you think hoodies are the height of chic. But Northampton, the home of excellent shoemaking, rarely (i.e. never) gets a mention. This is the bastion and wellspring, in many ways, of men’s style — a discipline built, quite literally, from the ground up. Shoes don’t complete an outfit, like fairweather accessories such as the pocket square or the cap — they start it; they are it.

La loro fabbrica, a Northampton, è qualcosa di straordinario: un luogo che ronza, sbuffa vapore, sferraglia, martella, ride, incita, cuce, tende, sigilla e respira. È da 146 anni che lavora così, con qualche aggiornamento qua e là. Gli odori che vi si respirano sono straordinari. Profumi autentici, profondi, capaci di raggiungere una parte ancestrale del cervello e di trasmettere la certezza di maestria e duro lavoro, raffinatezza e robustezza. Molti dipendenti dell’azienda lavorano qui da diversi decenni, alimentando una sorta di saggezza collettiva che non teme mode né tendenze passeggere. Sono questa costanza e questo spirito d’iniziativa a celarsi dietro ciò che, in apparenza, è soltanto un elegantissimo paio di scarpe. Ma c’è molto più di questo. È un promemoria del fatto che, forse, nulla è più elegante di un’eredità. Per il numero autunnale di Gentleman’s Journal, dunque, abbiamo preso in prestito parte di questa eredità come sfondo per il nostro servizio dedicato allo stile d’autunno.
