Why it pays to invest in the right shoes, from those who know

Footwear is something that needs investment: if you buy cheap shoes, it shows. Shoes get more wear and tear than any other item you’ll own: you most likely wear almost the same pair everyday without fail and they go through hell and back (especially if you live in England), so why wouldn’t you pay good money for a decent pair?

If you invest in the right pair, they should last you at least 5 years. We’ve already spoken about the importance of investing in your style when it comes to pieces like your shirt or suit, but what about an all-important accessory like your shoes? Jason Simmonds, operations manager at Herring says:

“Your shoes say more about you than almost any other piece of clothing, that is why we all notice them so much. The essential shoe in a gentleman’s wardrobe will not change much over time although his clothing may change from urban denim to country tweed daily, so the best marker of a man’s habits and values are his shoes. A poorly polished expensive shoe does not speak well of the owner. Likewise, a simple shoe that has been carefully looked after, suggests a man of good character.”

The Double Monk

The double monk strap is undoubtedly one of the best pairs of shoes for every sartorially sophisticated gentleman. These are one of the most versatile pairs of shoes that money can buy, whether you’re buying them to wear at work or for more casual situations.

Herring double monk, £295

Herring has been making beautiful, handmade (in England) shoes since 1966, and their double monk is one of the finest on the market. This pair will look amazing with jeans and a suit alike, but because of the brown we suggest going for darker shades of denim so as to keep the whole outfit classy. Simmonds says:

“There are 3 key reasons to buy a pair of Herring Shoes. Firstly they are handmade from natural materials by master craftsmen, so you are buying a special product. Secondly these natural materials such as twine, cork and leather, make them an environmentally sensible choice. Thirdly, they can be resoled at the factory making it possible to wear your favourite shoes for many, many years.”

The Smart Trainer

In recent years, the smart trainer has become a wardrobe staple for modern gentlemen. If you’re lucky enough to work a job where you don’t have to wear a suit everyday, these are perfect for you. And if you do have to wear a suit everyday, it pays to have a decent pair of shoes that you can kick back in over the weekend.

Harrys of London have become our go-to brand for this exact style of shoe and their incredible attention-to-detail. The Mr Jones 2 is the perfect smart trainer for city workers and casual gentlemen alike, and will look great with a smart, tailored pair of chinos or a pair of more casual jeans. CEO Steven Newey says,

“I believe this style is proving so successful for us as it is simply cool and contemporary; stylish and understated. What’s more, it’s handmade from the finest kudu suede, which means that it will last you years and is worth every penny of investment. The Mr Jones is a sneaker not just for the weekend or leisure, the Millennial man is wearing his to the office.”

The Loafer

The tassel loafer is the modern gentleman’s update on the classic loafer. And while the actual shape of a tasseled loafer is still as timeless as its older brother, the addition of the tassel adds a certain edge that makes it perfect for both casual and smart occasions, all the while keeping it incredibly wearable.

Crockett & Jones is a brand that we return to time and time again because of the stylish, functional and timeless element of its shoes. The shoes are extremely well-made, and will therefore last years and years. The tassel loafer is one that we would whole-heartedly recommend for style, function and value for money. James Fox, marketing manager at the brand, says:

“The tassel loafer is a classic of absolute form, and there is no better than our beloved Cavendish. Arguably one of the more sought after styles that we make in Northampton, the mainstay of our loafer collection – Cavendish – is enjoyed by our customers across the world and sales are certainly showing no signs of slowing up. Crockett & Jones retail is now running 5 versions of Cavendish in calf or suede and two versions in shell cordovan. We have another tassel loafer – Vincent – in the Hand Grade Collection and a brogue wingtip tassel is on its way for Spring/Summer 2016. Tassel loafers are here to stay.”
