Bar Review – Mr Fogg’s

Travel around the world and back again without having to leave the comfort of your crushed velvet armchair in the heart of Mayfair with this genuinely exciting and luxuriously quirky bar, Mr Fogg’s. Not only inspired, but a recreation of the home Jules Verne’s most famous adventurer Phileas Fogg would have lived in after returning from his ‘around the world in 80 days’ adventure, this bar’s aesthetic is fun, elegant, historical and utterly charming, celebrating the oddities in life with a mismatch of beautiful artifacts presented in a room with panache and spendor.

Mr Fogg’s – the first West End project from Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling, the men behind other London hotspots Barts, Maggie’s, Bunga Bunga and DISCO – doesn’t advertise itself on the street using bright, flashy lights to entice inebriated passers by to come in for a drink. This simply isn’t its style, it doesn’t need to be. Rather, Mr Fogg’s situates itself just off Berkley Square, a small plaque and Victorian lanterns the only visuals indicating you have actually arrived.

Step inside and the mystery is unveiled and, fear not, it lives up to all your expectations. Once relieved of your coats and umbrellas at the door by Mr Fogg’s valet Passepartout, you are led to your table by one of the staff, stylishly dressed in bespoke, old-fashioned Military style uniforms created by the one and only, Gieves and Hawkes.

What is exciting about the Mr Fogg’s decor is that there is so much to see and take in but, quite cleverly, it doesn’t overwhelm you. Low lighting and candles highlight the maps, paintings and animal skins that adorn the walls with antique birdcages and bicycles hanging from the ceiling. When it comes to the cocktails, they don’t disappoint. Exotic ingredients are expertly mixed to create tantalizing refreshments from the ‘Victorian Cocktailian Culture’ varied to accomodate everyone’s taste and palette. You won’t find cocktails like these on menu anywhere else in London so to enjoy them in an atmosphere as fun and unique as Mr Fogg’s is a real treat.

Looking to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in style? Monday 17th will see Mr. Fogg’s partner with Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey to delight guests with a right old Irish knees up. Music and entertainment will be provided by Celtic musicians, Banish Misfortune, who will provide the live soundtrack to the night.
