The Pick: Chanel’s first dedicated watch for men

The Monsieur de Chanel impresses with quiet confidence

Chanel is arguably one of the most iconic fashion brands in the world. A legendary fashion house that specialises in haute couture, Gabrielle Chanel founded the brand over a century ago, and the French company has grown ever since, incorporating everything from timeless fashion to timeless timepieces.

Latest in that line is the impressive, men’s watch; the Monsieur de Chanel. Built completely in-house, and with an appearance that presents a striking departure from your usual wristwatch, the Monsieur is a jumping hour watch – with a pronounced hour display at 6 o’ clock. The angular font was designed specifically for the watch, and the running seconds in the centre of the watch shows a retrograde minute display.

Overall, this watch is a triumph of time. The fashion house waited five years to create the perfect timepiece for men, and they’ve come pretty close. A three-day per reserve and a 40mm wide case that wears wonderfully on the wrist is undeniably desirable – but with a run of just 300 pieces, the watch is going to be hard to get on your wrist.
