The London restaurant to visit this week: Hawksmoor, Knightsbridge

Sit back, relax and indulge in a night of belt-loosening-style feasting

Given that the festivities have now ended and you’re probably scouring the net for some quick-fix tips on how to trim the turkey fat, you’ve most definitely landed on the wrong page – for if you continue to read on, all of December’s gluttonous habits will resurface once more. Why? Because in spite of all the fitness fads and juicing diets that are being thrown about right now, Hawksmoor still continues to sizzle up the UK’s finest steaks, and we’re here to tell you about it.

Although there are currently eight outposts in the country (including one up north in Manchester), it’s the Knightsbridge spot that impresses most, not because it serves the best steak (all branches’ food quality is of the highest order), but due to the fact it has an unassuming exterior located the quiet Yeoman’s Row, spacious seating everywhere (the other joints feel quite crowded at times) and a buzzy, unpretentious feel, despite being located in one the most affluent boroughs in the capital.

The ambience is…

For a restaurant that’s located in an area renowned for its cash-flashing oligarchs and salarymen, the crowd here is quite cool and calm. Moreover, the subterranean restaurant’s Art Deco flourishes (including elegant arched windows, brass trimmings and wood-clad walls) channel the glamour and sophistication of 1920s London, making it one of the more stylish places to visit in this neck of the city.

Order the…

“Old Spot belly ribs with vinegar slaw” – butter-soft and rich (but not sickly), the ribs are a certified way to get you in the mood for an evening of meat-focused dining.

“Vietnamese-style oysters” – spiked with ginger, soy and chilli, these bite-size seafood treats are a true hit and twist to the senses.

“Triple cooked chips” – crunchy on the outside and incredibly fluffy inside, a must-have side order.

“Spinach” – because you’ve got to keep things relatively healthy, right?

afp – de-char chateau

“T-bone” – although all the trimmings are of worldly calibre, steak is still the order of the day here, especially the T-bone (a gargantuan cut of beef that has a tender piece of fillet on one side and a hunk of sirloin on the other) which boasts an incredible depth of flavour. Succulent and perfectly-pink in the middle with a beautiful outer char, this dish proves that Hawksmoor is more than just a steak house – rather, it’s a meat mecca that celebrates all things good about quality British grass-fed beef.

“Ambassador’s Reception” – a playful take on a Ferrero Rocher (topped with a decadent gold leaf), this a dessert that you should definitely save some stomach space for.

Wear:

Don’t opt for something too slim if you want to get the most out of your Hawksmoor meal. A pair of wool chinos with an elastic waist and a soft cashmere shirt should set you up perfectly for the night.
