Escape to the seaside in the heart of Soho

Enjoy Squid Toast, Charcoal-Grilled Monkfish and Dorset Cuttlefish at Bonnie Gull

With a sister restaurant nestled in the busy streets of Fitzrovia, it was only a matter of time before the doors of Bonnie Gull opened in Soho. Open since December, and continuing its counterpart’s focus on small plates made for sharing, the atmosphere seems a lot more relaxed than the formal Fitzrovia location. Instead, this is pure Soho, and takes full advantage of the main bar running through the restaurant to allow guests seeing their food being prepared.

Be warned: this is a place for seafood enthusiasts only. Bonnie Gull excels in delicious, fresh, well-prepared sea food. Flavours are huge here and each small plate will deliver something completely different. Chat to the chefs behind the bar, who are more than happy to make suggestions tailored to your tastebuds – and will change up dishes depending on what you enjoy.

Oysters – raw, grilled and tempura

The atmosphere is really what makes this place. The bar, running along the main room of this tiny restaurant is cosy, inviting and informal. Great for one-on-one catch ups and retreating from the busy streets of Central London. The fun nature of sharing small plates and ‘making it up as you go along’ concept is best enjoyed with close friends or a date.

Bonnie Gull’s Executive Chef, Christian Edwardson, has lovingly created a hyper seasonal menu that will be change daily based on catch. The flavours that he manages to tease from such small dishes are a true credit to the group of chefs at work. Starting with my absolute favourite, the Chargrilled Dorset cuttlefish is by far the best dish on the menu and is a must-try- the flavours are next level.

Chargrilled King Scallop, pickled mushrooms and seawood

The Squid Toast with Ink Aioli; Wild Hayle Mussels cooked over embers with Parsley Hollandaise and Charcoal Grilled Monkfish Cheek & Duck Heart Skewer with Nduja Mayo are dishes you also must add to your order. A combination of the above with some well chosen side dishes – you’re in for a great night.

A simple wine list compliments the food here perfectly. The more than hospitable staff have great recommendations to compliment each dish and ensure the pairing is perfect.

Cuttlefish with chilli

If you’re on a tight budget, it’s probably not the place for you as combining small plates does often add up. However, the quality of seafood is incredibly reasonable with plates starting at £5-6 and going up to £12.

An overdue catch-up with a good friend or a relaxed date night.
